> 3:10 TO YUMA (R) A rancher
(Christian Bale) must keep his wits
about him while holding an outlaw
(Russell Crowe) until the train arrives
to take him to trial. I’m not sure what
to think about Walk the Line director
James Mangold's remake of the 1957
Glenn Ford/Van Heflin classic. Opens
Friday (Call Theaters)
976-EVIL (R) 1989. Too-cool-for-
school motorcycle dude Spike (Patrick
O'Bryan) discovers a 976 phone line

into satanic killers. Weird stuff hap
pens. people are killed in phone-related
ways. Hosted by Steve Miller. Shows

976-EVIL II (R) 1992. Spike (Patrick
O'Bryan) is all grown up now, and
has dedicated his Harley-ridin' life to
fighting evil; or more specifically, evil
phone lines. It seems that the local col
lege dean has been calling 976-EVIL
for advice on how to run a university,
kill coeds and harass the sheriffs
daughter. Directed by Jim Wynorski
(Chopping Malt). Hosted by Steve
Miller. Shows Monday, 9/10 (Flicker)
BALLS OF FURY (PG-13) See Movie
Pick. (Beechwood, Carmike)
BECOMING JANE (PG) Jane Austen
spent the majority of her short life
in obscurity. Her nearest brush with
romance was a short flirtation with Tom
LeFroy, an Irish lawyer. Becoming Jane
has retrofitted Austen's prospects with
a dewy complexion (Anne Hathaway),
a dishy Tom LeFroy (James McAvoy)
and the decision to have a go at living
“by the pen." The chemistry between
Hathaway and McAvoy is engaging,
the supporting cast is strong, and the
cinematography pleasing. [Jesslyn
Shields] (Beechwood)
THE BOSS OF IT ALL (NR) A cheeky'
comedy from the films of Lars von
Trier! While trying to sell his IT compa
ny. Ravn finds himself in a pickle. The
buyer wants to meet the fictional “boss
of it all' created by self-proclaimed
wuss Ravn to do all the dirty business
stuff—firings, canceling of staff out- •
ings, etc So, Ravn hires a pretentious,
out-of-work actor to portray the boss.
The second funniest film I’ve seen this
Summer. Ends Thursday (Cin6)
THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM (PG-13)
Director Paul Greengrass returns with
a third entry that elevates the series'
threat level to midnight. Shot and
edited at a breakneck pace, Ultimatum
is bursting with brutal beatings,
deadly double crosses and revelations
about BoumeS past. Well-cast and
acted. Ultimatum again allows Matt
Damon to whoop ass while still nailing
BoumeS conflict with his inner killer.
(Beechwood, Carmike)
BRINGING UP BABY (NR) 1938.
Howard Kawks' screwball comedy
is inarguabty one of the best. While
waiting (or a bone for his collection,
paleontologist David Huxley (Cary
Grant) gets into all sorts of farcical
misadventures with heiress Susan
Vance (Katharine Hepburn) and Baby,
VanceS pet leopard who gets mistaken
for an vicious escaped feline. Shows
Sunday, 9/9 (Oconee County Library)
THE BROTHERS SOLOMON (R) I
hope Bob Odenkirk’s newest comedy
about inept brothers searching for
women to provide their dying father
with a grandchild fares better than Let's
Go to Prison. With Jenna Fischer (“The
Office*). Opens Friday (Call Theaters)
DARKNESS FALLS (EPISODE
1) (NR) Athens’ own Thrillahill
Productions is proudly screening
‘Mandate,* the irst episode of TV
series. “Darkness Falls.’ Robert and
Frank, two men struggling to maintain
order in a city where everything's bad
(some things are just really bad), clash
over the mysterious death of a hooker.
This sounds like “Twin Peaks" had
Crockett and Tubbs gotten “Lost* there.
Shows Saturday, 9/8 (Little Kings)
DEATH AT A FUNERAL (R)
Blackmail, dark secrets and all-around
dysfunction mar the funeral of a de
ceased patriarch in this British black
comedy. With attendees including
Matthew MacFadyen, Alan Tudyk
(Serenit)), Ewen Bremner, and Peter
Dinklage (The Station Agent). Directed
by Frank Oz. (Beechwood)
DEATH SENTENCE (R) My Death
Wish finally comes true. Kevin Bacon
gets to go all Bronson to avenge his
sonS brutal murder at the hands of a
joy-riding street gang. Director James
Wan (Saw). (Beechwood)
EVAN ALMIGHTY (PG) Evan Baxter
(Steve Carell) has just won a seat in
Congress when God shows up with Ark
Building for Dummies. A weak attempt
to co-opt religion for box office gain.
Evan Almighty is errantly, inherently
unfunny. (Georgia Square 5, Highway
17 Theatres)
FOOTLOOSE (PG) 1984. I'm yearn
ing, burning to tell you that life is
passing you by if you've yet to see the
ultimate in Baptist repression, a danc
ing ban, flouted by none other than
Mr Six Degrees himself. Kevin Bacon.
Followed by a dance party. See ABC for
more. Shows Saturday, 9/8 (Flicker)
HAIRSPPAY (PG) This charming
picture is powered by the contagious
bounce of big-haired, big-boned
newcomer Nikki Blonsky, and catchy
songs. In 1960s Baltimore, Tracy
Turnblad (Blonsky) shows everyone
some new steps when she integrates
“The Corny Collins Show.’ With John
Travolta (Beechwood)
HALLOWEEN (R) I am psyched for
Rob Zombie's reimagination of John
Carpenter's slasher classic. Focusing
on the psychology behind Michael
Myers’ psychopathy. Zombie could ac
complish something akin to what Zack
Snyder and James Gunn did for Dawn
of the Dead With Malcolm McDowell.
(Beechwood. Carmike, Highway 17
Theatres)
HARRY POTTER & THE ORDER
OF THE PHOENIX (PG-13) HP5
begins with more danger and intrigue
than any previous Potter outing
Voldemort’s resurrection has Harry
(Daniel Radcliffe) fighting for his life.
A solid, if not quite dazzling, transition
from HP4 to HP6, HP5 will not disap
point hardcore Potterheads (Carmike)
HOT FUZZ (R) Whereas Shaun of the
Dead rifled on zombie movies, Edgar
Wright. Simon Pegg and Nick Frosts
newest feature takes aim at buddy cop/
renegade cop flicks. They never let us
see them sweat as they laboriously craft
gags so deep you’d think they were
serious filmmakers. Shows Friday, 9/7
& Sunday, 9/9 (Tate)
I NlW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK
AND LARRY (PG-13) Adam Sandler's
latest comedy fails at pretty much ev
erything it attempts: humor, characters,
message, you name it. Sandler and
Kevin James (“King of Queens") are
Chuck and Larry, two NYC firefighters
who get married to solve Larry's pen
sion problem. (Highway 17 Theatres.
Georgia Square 5)
THE INVASION (R) The fourth
adaptation of Jack Finney's Body
Snatchers adds little to the premise
of alien takeover by a pod-borne col
lective consciousness. A psychiatrist
(Nicole Kidman) must escape detection
and conversion by an alien species
long enough to get her son, human-
ityS last hope, to the ever-trustworthy
government. Full of unnecessary car
chases and mushy, non-linear editing.
(Carmike)
KNOCKED UP (R) When Alison Scott
(Katherine Heigl) decides to keep
the result of a one-night stand with
man-boy Ben (Seth Rogen), she sets
in motion a riotous two-hour journey
that mocks the ups and downs of
pregnancy, courtship and marriage on
the way to a heartfelt happily ever after.
(Georgia Square 5)
THE LAST LEGION (PG-13) Based
on the novel of the same name, this
fantasy adventure film starring Colin
Firth follows 12-year-old Romulus
Augustus (Thomas Gangster, Love,
Actually) as he escapes captivity and
travels to Britannia is search of the last
Roman legion. It seems like the movie
was shot as a serious epic, then re-art
to be a movie for tweens, but then they
realized how boring it was and tried to
market it to an older audience. (Alex
Moore & Lena Trotochaud] (Carmike)
LICENSE TO WED (PG-13) Reverend
Frank (Robin Williams) leads Ben
(John Krasinski) and Sadie (Mandy
Moore) through a rigorous mar
riage prep course. License to Wed
proves how valuable a comic property
Krasinski (“The Of1ice“) has become.
(Georgia Square 5)
LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD (PG-13)
This isn't much of a Die Hard at all. The
movie fails tr grasp the Regular Joe-
ness of John McClane (Bruce Willis),
but what it does get is action, and old-
man Willis is up to the challenge DH4
has him battling computer hackers led
by Timothy Olyphant (“Deadwood") As
testosterone-fueled actioners goes, this
one is a blast (Georgia Square 5)
THE MIGHTIEST LIE EVER SOLD

THE NANNY DIARIES (PG-13) The
Nanny Diaries isn’t bad; it's bland.
Too light to be taken seriously and too
serious to be taken lightly, the film,
directed and adaoted for the screen by
American Splendots Shari Springer
Berman and Robert Pulcini, never
finds the appropriate tone. If Annie
Braddock’s (Scarlett Johansson) ad
ventures in nannying are meant to be a
satirical look at the irresponsible chil
drearing of Manhattan’s upper crust,
they tug too much at the heartstrings
as little victim Grayer (Nicholas Reese
Art) is serially neglected by his mother,
Mrs. X (Laura Linney) and father, Mr.
X (Paul Giamatti). This indecisive film
(part-comedy, part-drama, but never
both at once) could never disengage
me from the parenting reality it was de
coding to enjoy Annie’s weak discovery
of herself. (Beechwood, Carmike)
NO END IN SIGHT (NR) First-time
feature director Charles Ferguson
allows the audience to come up with
their own interpretation of the Iraq

and Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush). A three-
hour behemoth, At Worlds End is one
clever swashbuckler fueled by Depp's

banging FX. (Georgia Square 5)
