Alt Epic At Best
Normally when a band has been largely absent from the Athens scene for the better part of
a year, the next announcement one will hear is that the members have revamped and will start
doing more things [see: Iron Hero]. Fans of heartrending local band An Epic At Best, though,
are gonna have to deal with the news that the band is going on "near-permanent hiatus."
Although the split is 100-percent amicable, it's still disappointing news from a band that had
grown from a solid, but same-y, piano-based emotive rock band to a fully dynamic rock outfit.
Band leader Robert Gunn says it's just time for the people in the band to do their own
things. As for specific plans, he says, Tm moving to France to study, Roy [Coughlin] is look
ing at moving to New York sometime and Jamie [McGaw] wants to finish school and graduate."
The band wiU enter the studio in the next couple of weeks to knock out a final EP of five
songs, each of which has been played live by the band over the past couple of years.
An Epic At Best's two final shows wiU be markedly different from one another. "The little
Kings show will be a shorter set," says Gunn, "but the Tasty World show, part of the Tasty
World anniversary celebration, will be the longest set we've ever played. We've never played a
cover song, but we're gonna do one that night we've been working on. We've got some friends
that will play horns. Basically, we're gonna do everything we know."
Gunn and the rest of the band are leaving open the possibility for a one-off "reunion"
show in the future, but, for now, these are your last two chances to see 'em. [Gordon lamb]
