JASON CROSBY
we ran again. We ran about another five or six
blocks until we entered a patio. The guide piled
plywood in front of us and we had to lie down
on our stomachs. Then he disappeared into the
streets. Another police car came. We remained
behind the plywood so they did not see us. I saw
the police car turn the corner because the patio
itself was on the corner. The guide came back
for us and said that he knew of a good place not
too far from there. Once again, we ran through
the city, just stopping at each corner to watch
for police.
FINALLY
Finally, we made it to a house like a duplex
where we stayed the rest of the night. The
people in the house were
worried, but they were
nice. First, they asked
us to be quiet because
the neighbors were just
behind the wall. They
asked if we were hungry,
and made us something
to eat. They made an egg
burnto. That was the first time I had ever eaten
a burrito, even though I'm from Mexico and the
burnto is considered a Mexican food.
The next day early in the morning we left the
house in two vehicles. I got into the rear of a
truck, a Toyota pick up or something tike that
with a camper. We lay down, six in the back and
two people (one was a lady) in front. We were
like that for three hours until we made it to
Phoenix, and to another home. We ate, changed,
took showers and split. A guy there took three of
us to another house in a bad part of town.
There were cholos outside the houses. They
askeo. "What are you looking atr in Spanish
when we looked at their faces. There were three
rooms, and one was for the women. The rest
of us shared two rooms, and we had one stove
and eggs to eat. We only had one bathroom.
We stayed there and they contacted our fami
lies. They told me that they would send me in
an airplane, and asked if I had an ID. I said I
didn't, and I didn't have the money to buy one.
We stayed for two more days. Then something
scary happened. They told us not to look out
the windows, and they put a couch in front of
the door so no one would get in. I snuck a peek.
There was a patrol outside. I thought they would
deport us again, but nothing happened.
We were frightened all night. The next day,
early in the morning, we left in a minivan. There
were 10 people: two drivers and a woman in
front, three in the first little seat, four in the
next seat, and two in the back. These guys had
a horrible ride. The smug
glers put the heat all the
way up and they said that
they were burning, but
the coyotes did not pay
attention. They did net
stop for water because
they did not want us to
stop to use thr» bathroom.
When I saw my family here in Athens, after
a week-long trip, I thought that the bad times
were over, and that everything would be okay
and safe. I was wrong... the nightmare had just
begun.
