The Line in the Sand:
Stories From the
U.SJMexico Border
Cin6
Newly-formed local troupe
La Compariia presents its sec
ond performance of The Line
in the Sand: Stories from the
U.S./Mexico Border at Cin6 on
Sept. 16. A staged reading of
a series of monologues, The
Line in the Sand was created
by a group of playwrights and
actors working with Catholic
Relief Services (CRS) who
visited the Arizona-Mexico
border in 2005 and inter
viewed people with a range of
perspectives on border politics
and the changes the border-
have seen as northward
migration has increased. The monologues are the real stories of real people, from z border
patrol agent to a rancher, and from a father whose daughter died in the desert to a humanitar
ian volunteer taking food and water to migrants in an effort to stem shockingly high rates of
border-crossing deaths. Photos of many interviewees appear in a slideshow accompanying the
readings.
The performance (with live musk by local duo Incatepec) draws as much strength from its
portrayal of a range of perspectives as from its raising of issues perhaps less noted in main
stream media, from questions of free trade and fair trade to the aforementioned humanitar
ian efforts. The widening of one's own perspective has been a key theme even for the group
presenting the performance, says Jos6 Blanco, a UGA textiles professor and director of the
production. Blanco, who is originally from Costa Rica and has done migrant-worker education
in the United States on health and environmental issues and studied Augusto Boal's Theater
of the Oppressed, says he was surprised by the degree to which he came to identify over the
course of rehearsals with his character, a border patrol agent simply overwhelmed with the
1100 square miles of desert his office is charged with covering.
The rehearsal schedule has been a tight one—the project only got started in July—and
it's been pushed along by a grassroots group of performer-organizers with a range of amateur
acting experience. These folks felt an urgency to get The Line in the Sands message out to the
local community as quickly as possible. (The production is unrelated, though very similar at
points, to the series currently running in Flagpole [see p. 10] on the same topic.) A question-
and-answer session follows each performance, and churches and other groups are encouraged
to consider hosting the group themselves. In addition to the performance at Cin*—where
admission is free but donations will be accepted for CRS and local organizations—a Sept. 25
engagement at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Athens is already on the calendar, too.
Says Blanco, "We'll go wherever we're invited." [Ben Emanuel]
