AMELIE (R) 2002 Even the most
hardened cynic would be touched by
young Amalie's (Audrey Tatou) mis
chievous eftorts to bring happiness to
people Beautifully titmed with a cam
era that seems boundless as it sails
through the streets ot Paris, the sense
ot humor here is quirky, sometimes
dark, and sometimes even naughty.
Drected by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Shows
Thursday. 9/13 (Tate)
BALLS OF FURY (PG-13) Balls of
Fury is a lowest-comedy-denominator
Hick made mildly amusing by some
seriously tunny performances After
losing out on the gold in Seoul,
former ping pong champion and Def
Leppard megatan Randy Montana
(Dan Fogler) gets a redemptive new
mission bringing down crime boss,
Feng (Christopher Walken) A fusion
of Bloodsport. Enter the Dragon,
and Mortal Kombat - not to mention
Chinese and Japanese culture - Balls
ot Fury rides the good-natured wave
of lead Fogler and star Walken The
seductive tug ot PG-13 humor (and
box office) neuters a possibly funny
premise (Carmike); Ends Thursday

BECOMING JANE (PG) Jane Austens
nearest brush with romance was a
short flirtation with Tom LeFroy, an
Irish lawyer Becoming Jane has
retrofitted Austens prospects with a
dewy complexion (Anne Hathaway), a
dishy LeFroy (James McAvoy) and the
decision to have a go at living "by the
pen." The chemistry between Hathaway
and McAvoy is engaging, the support
ing cast is strong, and the cinema
tography pleasing. [Jesslyn Shields)

THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM (PG-13)
Director Paul Greengrass returns with
a third entry that elevates the series’
threat level to midnight Shot and
edited at a breakneck pace. Ultimatum
is bursting with brutal beatings,
deadly double crosses and revelations
about Bourne's past Well-cast and
acted. Ultimatum again allows Matt
Damon to whoop ass while still nailing
Bourne’s conflict with his inner killer.

THE BROTHERS SOLOMON (R)
I'm sure someone out there will deem
the baby-making shenanigans of The
Brothers Solomon "classic' John
and Dean Solomon (Will Arnett and
Will Forte) are looking for a way to
grant their dying father (Lee Majors)
his last wish, a grandchild. Too bad
the boys spent their formative years
in Alaska and have no clue how to
interact socially or romantically with
normal people, especially the women
(including Jenna Fischer of “The
Office" and Knocked Up's Kristen Wiig)
they wish to impregnate. I’m still wait

DADDY DAY CAMP (PG) This sequel
to the Daddy Day Care replaces Eddie
Murphy with Cuba Gooding. Jr as
childcare provider Charlie Hinton
When Charlie and buddy Phil (Paul
Rae) branch into day camp, they dis
cover they know less about running a
camp than they do a day care. I’d rather
go back to summer camp than this
tripe again, and I hated summer camp.
Starts Friday (Georgia Square 5)
DEATH AT A FUNERAL iR) I failed to
discover where they buried all the fun
ny in Death at a Funeral, the latest woe
ful black comedy from Frank Oz. At the
memorial service for the patriarch of
a British family, all sorts of blisslessly
transparent sitcom-y shenanigans ,
ensue as sons, disappointingly stalwart
Daniel (Matthew Mactadyen, Pride
and Prejudice!) and successful writer
Richard (Rupert Graves), are harried by
a small stranger (Peter Dinklage) with
devastating family revelations Death
at a Funeral has the chuckle-less feel
of an American attempt at dry British
humor. Ends Thursday (Beechwood)
DEATH SENTENCE (R) It's hard to
believe Death Sentence, a stylish,
more-than-compctent revenge fantasy,
was helmed by the same guy who
dumped Dead Silence into theaters
this past spring James Wan. who
burst like a sliced femoral artery onto
the filmmaking scene in 2004 with the
grue-vy Saw, finally makes good on
his early promise (not that Saw was
a masterpiece, but Dead Silence was
an unthinkable step backwards) with
this amoral, emotionally resonant (go
figure) Death Wish remake After his
son is murdered, executive Nick Hume
(a skeletal Kevin Bacon) takes justice
into his own hands and inadvertently
starts a war with a small-time thug
(Garrett Hedlund looking and sounding
like one of Jeremy Sisto’s crazies) This
bloody, tense film is one of the few in
recent memory to repurpose the shaky,
handheld camera for function not

songs. In 1960s Baltimore, Tracy
Turnblad (Blonsky) shows everyone

who terrorized John as a child. With

THE NANNY DIARIES (PG-13) The
Nanny Diaries isn't bad; it’s bland. Too
light to be taken seriously and too seri
ous to be taken lightly, the film, directed
and adapted for the screen by American
SplendoTs Shari Springer Berman and
Robert Pulcini, never finds the appropri
ate tone If Annie Braddock's (Scarlett
Johansson) adventures in nannying are -
meant to be a satirical look at the ir
responsible child-rearing of Manhattan’s
upper crust, they tug too much at the
heartstrings (Beechwood)

hour behemoth. At World's End is one
clever swashbuckler fueled by Depp's

Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon)
