PETER ALVANOS (Mama's Boy) Peter
Alvanos plays his final breakfast-time
gig of the season at the local restau
rant. turning out a collection of covers
and original psychedelic pop-rock
tunes at 7:30 a.m.
DON CHAMBERS (Tasty World) A
local favorite among both beer-soaked
rockers and artsier fans, Chambers'
swampy, creaky tunes usually find
full-band action with a raucous gang of
friends delivering unrivaled Southern
Gothic stompers. Tonight's a stripped-
down set. though.
DEERHUNTER (40 Watt) Creative,
ambitious, hypnotic and even dance-
conducive noise rock from Atlanta.
Experimental niche label Kranky
Records recently released the five-
piece's new album Cryptograms, the
disc fuses a bit of '60s pop, layered
washes of sound, intriguing rhythms
and avant-garde drone. Benefit for
Georgia Lawyers for the Arts.
DJ SIZZLE (Loft) Spinning the dance
numbers every Wednesday.
DUO LUNAIRE (Farm 255) Danijela
Zezelj-Gualdi (violin) and John Huston
(guitar) play classical and contempo
rary numbers, from Paganini to Bloch.
ALEXIS GIDEON (40 Watt) Portland
freakout musician Alexis Gideon is a
compatriot of Dan Deacon, and trucks
in similar weirdo kitsch. His album
Welcome Song is a little bit of electro
funk, some Casio cheese, jokey rap
ping and more. Benefit for Georgia
Lawyers for the Arts.
JAY GONZALEZ (Kingpins) Nutria
keyboardist-vocalist Jay Gonzalez has
a gig in town as a "lounge singer" and
piano player, playing the standards and
covers of pop hits every Wednesday
from 8 to 11 p.m.
HEARTLESS BASTARDS (Tasty
World) Singer-guitarist Erika
Wennerstrom leads this Ohio blues-
rock trio with her vocals recalling Janis
Joplin, Patti Smith and Robert Plant
and guitar work that quotes Hendrix.
The band is rounded out by Kevin
Vaugn on drums and Mike Lamping on
bass; the distinctive sophomore album
is called All This Time.
KIP JONES (WOW Caf6) Many of
Jones’ own tunes split between the
reflective acoustic territory of Harvest-
era Neil Young and the country-infused
rock of '80s-era Steve Earle. His new
est album is called Downright. Every
Wednesday.

THOMAS KAY (Flicker) After a bit of
a break from his own material, Athens
tunesmith Thomas Kay (Betsy Franck
& the Bare Knuckle Band, ex-Grand
Fury) has re-entered the live scene with
earthy rock and roll.
NICK LIGHT (Georgia Theatre) Local
performer Nick Light plays with an
acoustic guitar and his heart on his
sleeve, going for a soulful, emo-lite
sound that draws on aspects of Damien
Rice, Bright Eyes and Dashboard
Confessional. Recently Light celebrated
the release of his new album The World
Forgetting By the World Forgot.
PAUL McHUGH (Flicker) Paul
McHugh spends most of hl^fime
onstage fronting Mother Jackson, the
hard-charging, ‘70s-sounding rock-
and-roll band rattling around town for
several years. Tonight, however, he's
taking the solo approach which should
prove essential for those eager to deci
pher Mother Jackson's lyrics. McHugh
says he’ll perform some of the band's
songs as well as some new solo stuff
he's been working on.
KEN WILL MORTON (Eastwood Pub)
Rough-and-tumble American rock
guy Ken Will Morton, former host of
the Melting Points songwriter series,
now holds court every Wednesday at
the Eastwood with a revolving group
of players.
MOUSER (40 Watt) Colby Carter (vo
cals, guitar) and his expanding gang
of backing musicians play efficient and
exuberant garage-pop songs that sug
gest a willingness to experiment, work
ing through outre noise jams to find the
aggressive pop hiding behind. Benefit
for Georgia Lawyers for the Arts.
MR. BROWN (Chapel) Deejaying
indie, underground and old school hip-
hop every Wednesday night.
PEARLENE (Tasty World) Cincinnati,
OH, band Pearlene—Reuben Glaser
(guitar, vocals), Jesse Ebaugh (bass,
vocals). Andy Jody (drums, percussion)
and Andrew Higley (piano, organ)—
play golden-era rock and roll, sounding
a lot like the Americana perfected by
The Band and then worked over with
a heavy psychedelic blues hand. The
kickin' new album is called For Western
Violence and Brief Sensuality.
PEOPLE (40 Watt) On the new album
Misbegotten Man, Brooklyn’s Mary
Halvorson (guitar, vocals) and Kevin
Shea (drums, vocals) play shuffling,
unpredictable pop somewhere between
experimental torch songs and bedroom
avant-jazz. Benefit for Georgia Lawyers
for the Arts.
‘POWERS (40 Watt) This new five-
piece band making its club debut
tonight features members of aggressive
local acts like Cinemechanica, We
Versus the Shark, Coulier and 300
Cobras. What've they got in store? It
seenis to be a quadraphonic sonic
attack, with four guitarists and one
drummer. Benefit for Georgia Lawyers
for the Arts.
PRIME TIME JAZZ (Porterhouse)
Drummer Tony McCutchen, bass
ist Chris Enghauser and pianist Jim
McKillip perform jazz standards for
the dinner-and-a-drink set every

NATHAN SHEPPARD (Wild Wing
Caf6) The local acoustic guitarist-
harmonicist is known for his emotive
•singing style and his modern rework
ings of classic tunes, from Dylan and
Young to Van Morrison. Acoustic

BRIAN SMITH (Casa Mia) Georgia
Guitar Quartet member Brian Smith
plays classical guitar every Wednesday
night at the downtown tapas restaurant.

Steve Key (guitar) and Atlanta's James
"Dub" Hudson on sax and clarinet.

Cosmic Charlie performs "interpreta
tions" of the Grateful Dead's vast

delivering its "Dark Side of the Dead"
performance, doing Pink Floyd’s Dark

songwriter Daniel Clay plays folk and
Americana tunes.

Collaborative project features Athens'
non-traditional hip-hop talents Old
