Joshua Redman Trio
Melting Point
It's tempting to general
ize about the current state of
jazz: The genre's mainstream
hasn't recovered since Kenny
G destroyed its reputation.
The avant-garde spirals
further and further into com
plete irrelevance. There's no
longer any room for innova
tion. And so forth. But none
of these oft-voiced argu
ments holds w-ter; counter
examples abound.
In fact, you can refute
any of the claims in the
previous paragraph by men
tioning saxophonist Joshua
Redman. Son of the late
Dewey Redman, a reeds--
man best known for working
alongside Ornette Coleman,
the younger Redman ditched
law school plans in the early
1990s to pursue a jazz career.
He quickly landed a major
label deal, and jazz purists
drooled all over his 1993
debut Joshua Redman, in which he injected a dose of playful soul into traditional bop forms.
As his career progressed, he met with about as much critical and commercial success as a jazz
musician could hope for in our day.
With 2000's Beyond, Redman began composing more inventive pieces, demonstrating that
there was room in mainstream jazz for demanding time signatures. That album also marked the
beginning of his partnership with bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Gregory Hutchinson,
both of whom will accompany him at tonight's Melting Point show.
This show date follows the release of Back East, Redman's first album of trio recordings.
Back East also marks for Redman a return to an acoustic setting; he spent the better part of
the last five years exploring funky fusion with his Elastic Band. Fortunately, Redman's return
to his roots is by no means regressive; on his new album, he provides creative interpretations
of songs by John Coltrane and Wayne Shorter, and he incorporates hints of Indian music into
his originals. Simply put, this is Redman at his best. [Phillip Buchan]
plays sale teen rock on the new album
Stay Inside.
THE STARTING LINE (UGA Legion
Field) Pop-punk heavyweights
The Starting Line head down trom
Pennsylvania; tor almost 10 years, the
band has been crafting a sound that
snags as much, if not more, from rock
bands like U2 rather than trom Blink-
182 and its ilk. The new one’s called
Direction.
THE WINTER SOUNDS (Flicker)
Land of No Output is last year's album
from this impressively non-stop local
band, just back from tour this week.
The five-piece creates an strong mix
of deft, rhythmic indie rock with vo
cal flourishes that occasionally touch
on emo, exploring a variety of song
structures. The new album Porcelain
Empire reworks some of those tracks
and presents ’em anew. Tonight’s show
is an acoustic one.
Friday. Sept. 21
BIRDS&WIRE (Melting Point) This
local four-piece plays a moody kind of
alternative country, incorporating sweet
vocal harmonies and steel sounds as
well as a rhythm section fluent in jazz.

guitarist Neal Fountain and drummer
Marlon Patton.

60s Japanese explosion of Beatles- and
Ventures-inspired groups—playing
pre-psychedelic, edgy garage pop and
rock and roll. Last year, The Captains
released their fourth album TheRock'n'
Roll Frontline, as well as an EP called
GS Covers of classic ’60s-era tunes.
CHRIS NIX BAND (Wild Wing Cafe)
Rock band.
BRIAN CONNELL (Melting Point)
Guitarist-harmonicist Brian Connell
and his band The Dickens perform
intriguing alt-country originals, but

in sounds from The Band and Dylan
Tonight's show sees Connell bring his
work to fruition, celebrating the release
of The Sordid

Punch, Let's Surf! and No Patriots.

dance party.

p.m. every Friday and Saturday, local

or early Replacements,’ says Grubbs.
E.R.E. (Farm 255) Roots reggae from
Atlanta. ERE—the Eclectic Roots
Ensemble, formally—plays ital sum
mer jams with an electrified take.
THE EMERALDS (Tasty World) Rock-
and-roll trio The Emeralds hopped a
plane from Yokohama. Japan, bringing
a 70s rock and power pop sound—
think Cheap Trick. Kinks, Bowie or The
Knack—stateside.
RICKY FITZPATRICK (Saving Grace)

acoustic numbers in the James Taylor
vein, working in several country, pop
and classic rock covers. Playing at the

With Emmie Beretta on vocals, guitar
and keys, Neal Nelson on bass, Carter

themic punk on others.
HAM1 (40 Watt) Guitarist Jim
Willingham handles the frontman stuff,
while Eric Harris (drums), Jacob Morris
(cello) and Chris Sugiuchi (trombone)
work the other stuff. Exuberant, quirky

always surprise. Tonight, the band will

The Captains Table for sale; see p. 32

on drums and Kyle Tuttle on bass.
THE lEE BOYS (Georgia Theatre) The
dynamic gospel sounds of Florida's Lee
Boys fall squarely in the sacred steel
tradition, coming out of the 1930s. The

country), creating a frenzied and often
jaw-dropping spiritual mix.
