MUSIC NEWS AND GOSSIP
And Do This The Night Before:
The local rockers in The Dumps
have finished a five-song EP
titled And So It Begins, but
have no idea when or how they
will release it. Does that count
as news? At any rate, the band
recorded it up in Columbia, SC
studio The Jam Room with engi
neer Philip Cope from Savannah
band Kylesa. Really itching to
get your hands on a copy? Then head to Tasty World upstairs on
Thursday, Sept. 20, and harass The Dumps about it when they play
with Baroness and American Heritage. Or drop 'em a line over at
www.myspace.com/thedumps.
TGIF: Friday, Sept. 21, marks the 25th anniversary of the United
Nations-created International Day of Peace. What happens on
this day, which always coincides with the opening of the UN
General Assembly, is that people around the globe get together
and do various activities designed to promote, inspire and propa
gate the unwieldy notion of world peace. Here in Athens, there
will be a 12-hour vigil at the UGA Arch that day, from noon to
midnight, but there is also a "Music For Peace" concert over at
Little Kings from 7 to 10 p.m. featuring Gabriel Kelley, Garnet
River Gals and 3PeaceBand. For information on the local event,
please call 706-795-3223, and to get more information on the his
tory and purpose of the day itself, please see www.international
dayofpeace.org.
A Year, That's It: This past weekend, local bar Repent both cel
ebrated its one-year anniversary and mourned its own dosing. The
bar is currently on the market and owner Missy Koefod says, "I'm
closing it because I'm starting law school in Atlanta and can't go
to school and run a bar in two different parts of the state." Simple
enough. All scheduled shows have been canceled. When Repent
opened, speculation was wide open about whether the extremely
loyal Lunch Paper crowd would stick around to see a new estab
Back To Three: Local jazz band
Squat played its final show
last week with drummer Darren
Stanley. Stanley, who has been
with the band for the past six
years, is also a member of the
Atlanta-based Delta Moon and,
after struggling to juggle both
commitments, has gone his own
way. The band now features a
"revolving drum chair" which
will be filled routinely and alter
nately by Carlton Owens, Louis
Romanos, Jason Cheek and
Justin Vames. The band will
continue to book private shows,
wedding receptions and other
whatnot, but will take the rest
of the fall off from public per
formances. Member Trey Wright
says, "After 13 years together as
a group, it is time to reinvent
the group and let the music
evolve."
Register Now: Interested parties
can register now for the annual
Nuq's Space S.P.A.C.E. Race.
The acronym stands for Suicide
Prevention, Awareness and
Community Education and the event is a 5K walk/run which takes
place Saturday, Oct. 13. If you register before Oct. 10, it costs $12
for UGA students and faculty and $15 for everyone else. After that,
it'll cost $18 for everyone. A new feature of this year's race is the
inclusion of team participation. Folks are encouraged to form a
team: workmates, families, etc. Please consider doing this and get
more information over at www.nuci.org. All proceeds benefit the
work of Nuip's Space.
Can You Hear Me Now?: Even though it's months away, the dates
for AthFest 2008 have been announced. The annual music festival
will take place in Athens clubs and on the streets from June 18 to
22, 2008. What you may not know is that the AthFest organization
also hosts a few other things throughout the year. For example,
AthFest has teamed up with the Music Business Program at the
University of Georgia and will hold its next music seminar on
Saturday, Oct. 20. Also, the festival has put the call out to poten
tial sponsors, volunteers and other folks who would like to partici
pate in next year's festival. Questions? Email info@athfest.com.
Be sure to keep your news coming in and always mention either

Hello, people. I certainly hope everyone has fallen swimmingly
into autumn. There's lots of stuff to navigate this week, too, so
start swimming below...
Pay The Man And Do Some Good: Mercer West, the dude behind all
the recent free Tuesday shows at the 40 Watt and the past couple
of years' worth of shows at DIY venue The Secret Squirrel, has or
ganized a benefit for Georgia Lawyers for the Arts which will take
place Wednesday, Sept. 19 at the 40 Watt. The totally awesome bill
features Deerhunter, Mouser, New York's People, Oregon's Alexis
Gideon and new hot shit Athens band 'Powers (featuring members
of Cinemechanica, We Versus the Shark and Coulier). The show
costs $8 and doors open at 10 p.m. Georgia Lawyers for the Arts is
a wonderful organization that provides free legal help to all sorts
of artists, not just musicians. Please see www.glarts.org, come to
the show and support those who are actually on our side.

I promise you this.
lishment come into its beloved space, but all evidence has shown
that either 1) they were all too drunk to move anywhere else or
2) Repent did a bang-up job of keeping the spirit of the old joint
alive. Here's to whomever acquires the spot keeping alive the spirit
of keeping spirits alive.
Start of the Week!: This is a packed weekend for shows as it is,
but don't overlook these two "slow night" shows at the 40 Watt
Club either: indie hip-hop shines with Atmosphere, Grayskul,
Luckyiam and Mac Lethal on Monday, Sept. 24, and The Apples
in Stereo, VHS or Beta, Aqueduct and Walter Meego rock’t on
Tuesday, Sept. 25. Hot damn!
Y Work Still Works: The folks in local pop band Gemini Cricket
seem to have had some wind blown into their sails after garnering
solid and complimentary reactions from their performance at this
past summer's Athens PopFest. Currently, the band is working on
a new cassette EP for Popgun Records to be released in October,
a separate CD EP for release in November and a split 7" vinyl
release with Athens band The French Toasts for mid-December.
The group will play shows celebrating all this stuff, so be sure to
check Flagpole's ABC music list
ings section or this page in the
future. If you've just gotta have
more information right now,
please see www.myspace.com/
