3:10 TO YUMA (R) A remake of (he
1957 classic, Ihe film meanders a bit
on its way to the appointed train but
ultimately arrives at a conclusion as
stunning as it is graceful. Outlaw Ben
Wade ^Russell Crowe) and desperate
rancher Dan Evans (Christian Bale)
bond on the way to meeting that fateful
train, with Wade's gang, now led by the
volatile Charlie Prince (Ben Foster), in
hot pursuit. Even as 3:10 to Yuma fails
to shake the trudging pace inherent in
the Western, where everything but the
bullets move slower, its company is
first-class and its destination eloquent.

THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM (PG-13)
Director Paul Greengrass returns with
a third entry that elevates the series'
threat level to midnight. Shot and
edited at a breakneck pace, Ultimatum
is bursting with brutal beatings, deadly
double crosses and revelations about
Bourne's past. Well-cast and acted
iBeechwood)
THE BRAVE ONE (R) The Brave One
dares to question vigilantism's godlike
arrogance, its Old Testament “eye for
an eye. tooth for a tooth’ justice, more
nan any film in the genre's history
Radio persooality Erica Bain (two-time
Academy Award winner Jodie Foster)
simultaneously rebuilds and loses
herself to an empowering killing spree
alter her fiance is murdered. Director
Neil Jordan (The Crying Game) doesn't
revel in the blood and gristle of Erica's
conquests. Instead, he brings weighty
questions of conscience into the
proceedings without offering simple
answers. What the film presents in
place of answers is humanity aptly
represented by the duo of Foster and
Terrence Howard. With its heady intel-
lectualizing of vigilantism, The Brave
One denies the audience vigilante
cinema's greatest asset, the violent
catharsis. Overcorrecting the moral
deficiency of Death Sentence and its
ilk, The Brave One entertains so many
unanswerable, high-minded queries
that it fails to entertainingly answer any
of them. (Beechwood, Carmike)
COMO AGUA PARA CHOCOLATE
(R) 1992. Known here in the States
as Like Water for Chocolate, direc

DRAGON WARS: D-WAR (PG-13)
How did this large cinematic turd
escape being flushed down the toilet
of the Sci Fi Channel's Saturday night
movie and land a theatrical release?
Based on a Korean legend, Dragon
Wars is absolutely ludicrous, a bunch
of "What the hell?’ exposition about
monsters destroying L.A.. strung
together by cheapo FX. (Beechwood):

Evan Almighty is errantly, inherently
unfunny. (Georgia Square 5, Highway

GOOD LUCK CHUCK (R) More
soft-core porn than actual comedy,
Good Luck Chuck fails in everything
it attempts. Chuck (Dane Cook) has
been cursed since middle school: every
girl he sleeps with falls in love with
the next man she dates This is all well
and good until he meets the clumsy-
yet-gorgeous Cam (Jessica Alba), the
girl of his dreams, and thus, must find
a way tu break the curse. Riddled with
vulgar sex jokes and raunchy scenes,
Chuck leaves its audience feeling more
violated than amused The chemistry
between Alba and Book fizzles, while
the cliched plot and uninspired script
don't leave them much to work with.
Alba is awkward, Cook channels too
much stand-up comedian The only
redeeming qualities in the movie are
Alba's sloner brother and a tew pen
guins. If you want to feel uncomlorlable
and genuinely unnerved, this is the
movie for you Or maybe you're |ust

H.G. WELLS’ FIRST MEN IN THE
MOON (NR) 1964. Astronauts who
think they are the first men on the
moon discover instead an old British
flag, claiming the moon for Queen
Victoria. Investigation back on Earth
reveals an earlier flight in a sphere
coated with Cavorite (which repels
gravity) and the discovery of the insect
like Selenites inhabiting the Moon.
A classic, lesser-known sci-fi gem.

HAIRSPRAY (PG) This charming
picture is powered by the contagious
bounce of big-haired, big-boned
newcomer Nikki Blonsky, and catchy
songs. In 1960s Baltimore. Tracy
Turnblad (Blonsky) shows everyone
some new steps when she integrates
“The Corny Collins Show" With John
Travolta. (Georgia Square 5)
HALLOWEEN (R) Rob Zombie's
reimagining (for lack of a better term)
of John Carpenter's slasher classic
redesigns the entire concept of a
remake. The first half brutally unmasks
Michael Myers with a fleshed-out
origin that supplements as well as
complements the original. Zombie's
film is far from flawless, particularly
when the rocker-turned-director begins
recounting the holiday killing spree,
so bloodlessly and effectively captured
by Carpenter. Zombie unnecessarily
complicates Halloweens simplicity to
the labyrinthine point of chronological
and geographic confusion. The forty-
year-old writer-director also totally
fails to recapture the original's natural
rhythm of teenage female interaction
And I miss PJ. Soles from the original
film. Nonetheless. Halloween is the
franchise's best effort in nearly 30
years, and a fitting addition to Zombie’s
brief, promising filmmaking career.

I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK

delivers a movie that has more of an
independent spirit than its dumb dude
comedy trailer betrays Every time
Thornton's a-hole routine seems to
grow tired, he freshens it up ever so
slightly Mr Woodcocks weakest link
is Scolt. who specializes in younger,
less mature versions of Thornton's
dicks, not wusses like Farley The
scenarios can lazily stray to the cliched
and obvious, but it doesn't matter Just
as Mr Woodcock reminds John that

that Mr Woodcuck is just a comedy
