rescued by Will (Orlando Bloom),
Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) and
Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush). A three-
hour behemoth, At World's End is one
clever swashbuckler fueled by Depp's
slapstick coconut rummy and some
banging FX. (Georgia Square 5)
RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION
(R) See Movie Pick and Flick Skinny.
(Beechwood, Carmike)
RUSH HOUR 3 (PG-13) Rush Hour
3 is a pleasant enough diversion that
never achieves the giddy fun of the first
two installments. RH3displaces Chris
Tucker's Detective James Carter and
Jackie Chan's Chief Inspector Lee in the
City of Lights, where they must bring
the Chinese Triad to its knees. Tired
and repetitive, the buddy flick remains
an entertaining hour and a half due to
the concrete chemistry of its two leads.
Returning director Brett Ratner moves
the movie along steadily enough, but
RH3 is missing the action and the
comedy that made the first two flicks so
surprisingly entertaining. (Carmike)
THE SIMPSONS MOVIE (PG-13) I
can't help but greet the feature version
of this cultural institution with a single.
‘D'oh!' As "South Park" presciently de
clared, "Simpsons did it." They've done
it so much that most every surreal plot
turn and nonsensical gag are recycled.
(Georgia Square 5)
SURF'S UP (PG) A mockumentary
of up-and-coming surfer and pen
guin Cody Maverick (voiced by Shia
LeBeouf), the mildly amusing, never
hysterical Surf's Up has a hard time
finding its wave, but once it does,
settles into a nice comedic rhythm,
thanks to some multi-generational
gags and a sensationally deep vocal
characterization by Jeff Bridges. After
escaping his Antarctic hometown,
Cody bombs his first run and winds up
in the jungle with old surl bum Geek
(v. Bridges). The lessons are all pat
and the documentary P.O.V. dropped
whenever it becomes dramatically
inconvenient. Still, soothingly beautiful
ocean animation and terrifically amus
ing performances make Surf's Up a
nice little wave to catch. Shows Friday,
9/28 & Sunday, 9/30 (Tate)
SUPERBAD (R) The super-raunchy
all-night adventures of best buds and
lovable losers Seth (Michael Cera) and
Evan (Jonah Hill) as they seek beer and
sex was waiting for the ribald, heartfelt
guidance of producer Judd Apatow,
the writer-director of The 40-Year-Old
Virgin and Knocked Up. Less cartoon-
ish, more real and megatons more nas
tily funny than American Pie. Superbad
captures the life and travails of the
geeky—read normal—high-school
male. (Beechwood); Ends Thursday
(Carmike)
SYDNEY WHITE (PG-13) Amanda
Bynes continues her cutesy teen
roles with her turn as Sydney White
(as in Snow White, get it?), an anti
sorority girl who likes comic books
and wears Converse sneakers. Sydney
desperately wants to be a part of the
fictional sorority Kappa Phi Nu. but her
nonconforming personality garners the
malice of president and super-bitch
Rachel Witchburn (a delighllully mean
Sara Paxton). With the help of seven
dorks and a charming prince, a happily
ever alter is successfully achieved One
wonders how well this film will do in
a town full of sorority girls, because, it
really is a tribute to the anti-Greek set.
While the movie is chockfull of cliches
and predictability, and would have done
better to avoid the Snow White prem
ise, it doesn't take itself too seriously
and succeeds in being what it intends:
a cute comedy for teen girls. [Maggie
Summers] (Beechwood, Carmike)
TAKE THE LEAD (PG-13) Antonio
Banderas joins the ranks of the edu
cational reformers as Pierre Dulaine,
a professional ballroom dancer whose
Dancing Classrooms are sweep
ing across the national dance floor.
Turning inner city thugs into Freds
and Gingers, Dulaine says “I hope you
dance" to the toughest toughs New
York's public school system can offer,
kids like Canada's own Lauren Collins
(“Degrassi: The Next Generation").
Like a Spanish Confucius, Banderas’
Dulaine utters fortune cookie apho
risms from his “dance is life philoso
phy." (My favorite: When referring to
the people who get what they want,
Banderas sexily intones, “Those are the
people who show up to get it." Second
favorite: “Everyone expects nothing
from you ") I know public schools can
be dangerous, but who knew ballroom
dancing was so fraught with peril? Evil,
hirsute administrators who resemble
David Cross, bad plumbing and bitchy
white chicks all threaten our graceful
high schoolers as they prepare for the
big competition. By the time Dulaine
and company hijack the dance compe
tition, Take the Lead has tripped over
the light fantastic. Part of the Hispanic
Heritage Month Film Series. Shows
Monday, 10/1 (ACC Library)
YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN (PG)
1974. To take a cue from Igor (Marty
Feldman), it’s not “too late" to see Mel
Brooks' classic monster movie parody
before the musical hits Broadway. Dr.
Frederick "I'm not a Frankenstein. I'm
a Fronkensteen" Frankenstein (Gene
Wilder) returns to the family castle and
resurrects the family Monster (Peter
Boyle) with monstrously hilarious
results. Young Frankenstein reifies
Brooks' status a* one of Hollywood's
fop funny filmmakers despite Dracula:
Dead and Loving II. Wilder and Brooks
were nominated for the Academy Award
for Best Adapted Screenplay. With
Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman.
Teri Garr and Gene Hackman. Shows
Friday, 9/28-Sunday, 9/30 (Cin6)
