EASTERN PROMISES (R) The plot of David
Cronenberg's latest, Eastern Promises, is cen
tered on a midwife named Anna Khitrova (Naomi
Watts), the baby girl she delivers in the opening
scenes of the film—and a diary. The child (and
the diary) belong to a young Russian prostitute
who dies during childbirth. From this point on,
Anna is reluctantly pulled into the seedy under
belly of London's Russian mafia in an attempt to
find the child s clos
est living relatives.
A clue in the diary
leads her to a Russian
restaurant run by the
seemingly kind and fa
therly Semyon (Armin
Mueller-Stahl), who is
really a ruthless mob
boss. She also crosses
paths with the crime
ring's newest driver/
butcher, Nikolai Luzhin
(Viggo Mortensen).
For those of
you familiar with
Cronenberg's oeuvre,
and expecting to see
another History of
Violence, you will be Viggo Mortensen and Naomi
disappointed. Despite
seeing someone get their throat cut in the open
ing scenes of the film, there is surprisingly little
gore—especially when you consider that not
only is this a David Cronenberg film, it's about
the notoriously violent Russian mob. However,
there is still some really great ultraviolence
to be had. The fight scene where Nikolai gets
jumped in a public bath is painfully, and let me
say that again for emphasis, painfully realistic.
Not to mention we get to see Viggo Mortensen's
penis, for those of you who are into that sort of
thing. Bloodied nudity aside, the film is filled
with award-worthy performances, especially from
Mortensen and Watts. Watts does look kind of
nauseated the whole time, but that is probably
because she was pregnant during shooting; I
think it might have helped her performance, any
way. As for Mortensen,
he has a nearly flaw
less Russian accent,
and is totally believ
able as a really scary
Russian mobster.
I can honestly say
this movie is not what
you will expect. There
are definitely some
Godfather-ly overtones
that seep through, but
that is to be expected
from most any mafia
movie. At almost every
turn, it takes a slightly
different path from
the ordinary. There
is so much going on
Watts in this tale of fathers
and sons, loyalty, loss,
hope and despair. From the cinematography to
the deceptively languorous pace for a thriller, the
movie is filled with small, unexpected moments.
Cronenberg seems to be banging the square peg
into the round hole with this one; however, it is
definitely on purpose and it works marvelously.

RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION (R) Milla Jovovich
returns as the ass-kicking, DNA-modified Alice
in the third installment of the Resident Evil fran
chise. And that itself is no small feat; after all,
how many action franchises (other than .Alien)—
are anchored by a female star? The first film
captured the feel of the game, if not the actual -
story, and the second, Resident Evil: Apocalypse,
was pretty bad. Extinction picks up the story as
Alice, having escaped from the evil clutches of
the Umbrella Corp. yet again, roams
the desert of the American Southwest.
She hooks up with a ragtag caravan
led by Ali Larter ("Heroes") and they
attempt to get to Alaska to safety.
Meanwhile, the story cuts back and
forth between Alice and the gang and
an evil Umbrella Corp. doctor who has
been experimenting on the infected,
supposedly in an attempt to domes
ticate them. Instead, they only get
stronger and more mutated. Chaos, of
course, ensues.
At least it appears that the budget
for Extinction was much more gener
ous than for Apocalypse, with hordes
of infected CG crows. Plus, we get
up close and personal with the infected people
many times. How refreshing! Newcomers to the
Resident Evil universe will be pretty lost when it
comes to all the corporate shenanigans, but re
ally, folks, what moviegoer who hasn't played the
game or seen the other films would bother?
At least the franchise has something going
for it, no wimpy PG-13 rating here! If you're
gonna get gory, have the guts (ahem) to go all
the way. Costars Larter and Oded Fehr ("Sleeper
Cell") gamely try to pretend they are in a quality
film, all earnest and courageous and whatnot.
But, a movie based on a video game, well, it is
what it is. One thing that must be mentioned:
all throughout the mostly dusty, sun-baked film,
Milla's face appears to have been digitally air-
brushed to perfection. Remember the Spartans in
300 and how their faces had an iridescent digital
sheen? Like that. Her face is luminously smooth
to the point where it becomes really distracting.
Milla Jovovich
especially since her unfortunate costars don't
get the same treatment—especially the men!
Although, like the underrated Silent Hill and even
the horrid Tomb Raider films, at least the women
kick some mutant ass, take names, and live to
tell the tale. Maybe. That's right. Don't expect a
great deal of resolution, as Extinction seems to be
setting us up for a fourth Resident Evil adventure.
