ALLIE & THE BANDITS (Caledonia)
Allison Weiss set up shop in Athens
in 2005 and dove into the open-mic
scene, delivering catchy, emotion-driv
en acoustic guitar songs. Her debut re
lease, An Eight Song Tribute to Feeling
Bad & Feeling Better, is out now, and
she’s just back Irom a briel tour. She’s
playing these days backed by a couple
of other local musicians

with interesting, reverb-y guitar curls
juxtaposed against more predictable
chanted/ yelled punk-type vocals.

songwriter Dana Downs, formerly ot
’80s punk band Vietnam, has spent
many a night perlorming her soulful
and brassy songs on fiont porches and
in living rooms, and only recently be
gan stepping into the live setting. The
tunes veer between acoustic rock, light
folk-punk and traditional forms
JAY GONZALEZ (Kingpins) Nutria
keyboardisty-vocalist Jay Gonzalez has
a gig in town as a 'lounge singer” and
piano player, playing the standards and
covers of pop hits every Wednesday
from 8 to 11 p.m.
KIP JONES (WOW Caf6) Manyol
Jones' own lunes split between the
reflective acoustic territory ot Harvest-
era Neil Young and the country-intused
rock of ’80s-era Steve Earle. His new
est album is called Downright. Every

ed the release of his new album The
World Forgetting By the World Forgot.

from Virginia* Lex Vegas, a confronta
tional and crashy metal/ hardcore band

Steven Grubbs, Jordan Noel and Alex
Nackashi play upbeat garage rock. “We
sound like catchy, poppy, early punk
rock a la Slid Little Fingers. Real Kids

aims to focus on artists proficient in

Tennessee band playing around
with classic rock, funk and '90s-Los

Jason Aldean released his self-titled
debut album in 2005 His smooth,
voice and (datable lyrics were well-

THE BLUE-HAIRED LADIES
(Georgia Bar) With Doug Warren on
vocals and guitar and McCall Calhoun
handling bass, vocals and guitar, this
Atlanta duo slings out some easygoing,
rock-influenced, psychedelic bluegrass
and jazz sitting (irmly in the newgrass
category.
MARK BRUT (Flicker) ”My songs
tend to lean towards my personal
experiences.” says local songwriter
Mark Brut of the band Loose Cannon.
“Sometimes a little on the dark side,
