I do not ask these questions and make these assertions to
mock the Republican Party or the conservative Christian move
ment. I write to appeal to everyone who reads and thinks to say
in one voice, "We have had enough. Lawmakers, start dealing
with the issues that matter or find another job." This is America,
and we are free to raise our children as we see fit, teach them
the philosophies we hold dear, and lead them to the church of
our choice—or not. That is what freedom for all means. But it is
simply not government's responsibility to legislate our morals or
tell us what to believe, and when we give them free rein to do
so, they create a holy mess. I pray, yes, I said I pray that this
hypocritical effort to save America from homosexual immorality
and secular decadence is over. The last person in the world ca
pable of saving us is some politician or a self-ordained political
prophet. Folks, can't nobody save us but ourselves... and each in
his or her own way.

GOD AND GREED DON'T MIX
• Which is more important: how the world and humanity
were created, or how humanity is destroying itself and the
world's environment?
• Which is more important: what sexual orientation some
one has or if they are law abiding, tax-paying citizens?
• Which is more important: if homosexuals can get mar
ried or if affordable health care is available in America?
• Which is more important: the debate over when life be
gins or the quality of life a child has following birth?
• Which is more important: control of the mind or educa
tion of the mind?

Following George Bush's, Dick Cheney's and Karl Rove's vic
tory in 2004, I wrote the following in my post-election column:
"When the volatile political bedfellows of money and reli
gion discover the honeymoon is over, the break-up will affect
all of us. When this relationship runs its course—and it will—
tolerance, optimism and vision will put the pieces back together.
Believing in the ideal for which our democracy stands will ulti
mately save us from ourselves."
Well, I hate to say it, but I told you so.
Once again, the notion that the Republican Party will make
us all morally superior and safe from the so-called dregs of the
Earth was blown t^ bits by the antics of Idaho Senator Larry
Craig.
If you have not watched the news for the last month or so.
I'll quickly fill you in. The conservative three-term senator was
a central figure in the fight against gay marriage and voted
against the proposal to allow the practice. He also voted against
any laws that would classify violent crimes against homosexuals
as hate crimes. He is one of
the political poster children
of the conservative, Christian
movement that has taken over
American political reasoning
for the last decade-plus. But
a few months ago, an under
cover cop in the Minneapolis
airport caught him allegedly
seeking sexual favors in the
men's bathroom. Oops.
The senator pled guilty,
then said, "Well, maybe I
shouldn't have done that." So
what does this all mean?
When the Republican Party, Senator Larry Craig
mainly Karl Rove, ignited the
Christian base with the debate over homosexuality, abortion and
other social issues, it was for one purpose and one purpose only:
to get George Bush elected and secure a Republican majority in
Congress and the Senate. I have serious doubts Rove picked his
campaign mantra out of concern for the moral fiber of America.
He knows morals cannot be legislated, and I doubt his ethical
backbone is very straight. Rove used the emotions of ministers
and church members all across this nation to get what he want
ed, his boy in the White House. And it would take God in all his
glory coming down and telling me differently to make me believe
differently. So what do we do with this hoiy mess created by the
unholy alliance of political greed and Christianity? We a", better
wake up very quickly and find some leadership to address what
matters, that's what. We must ask ourselves and honestly answer
the following questions:
