30 DAYS OF NIGHT (R) The ground
breaking graphic novel by Steve Niles
is now the second teature film from
Hard Candy director David Slade. In
Barrow, AK. the sun sets for 30 straight
days, unleashing a bloodthirsty horde
of vamps that must be stopped by
the town's husband-and-wife sheriff’s
department (Josh Hartnett and Melissa
George). I hope Niles’ sublimely simple
horror tale sun/ives the trip to the big
screen. Opens Friday (Beechwood,
Carmike)
THE 300 SPARTANS (NR) 1962. For
those who like their historical epics
a bit more low-tech, here’s an earlier
take on the Battle of Thermopylae
(chronicled so well in 300). Richard
Egan stars as stalwart King Leonidas,
who leads his 300 Spartans against the
Persian army of Xerxes. With two-time
Oscar nominee Sir Ralph Richardson.
Shows Monday, 10/22 (Flicker)
ACROSS THE UNIVERSE (PG-13)
Director Julie Taymor’s latest film fol
lows a group of young people (Evan
Rachel Wood as Lucy. Jim Sturgess
as Jude. Joe Anderson as Max, Dana
Fuchs as Sadie—get it? And no. Max
is not a serial killer) finding their way
during the turmoil of the late 1960s.
This film is Hair[same basic story,
even) where all the hippies are cleaner
and more attractive—and only sing
Beatles songs. Stay home and watch
Hair while listening to Let It Be.
(Margaret Moore] (Beechwood)
ARMY OF DARKNESS (R) 1993.
Ash (Bruce Campbell) returns for a
third Deadite-demolishing installment
of Sam Raimi's ode to Lovecraft. While
this third film has claimed the top
spot in many a fan* heart, I find it’s
‘everything is bigger* (except for Mini-
Ash) mentality a bit overwhelming. Yet
as soon as I long for the simple days
of a cabin and a chainsaw, the sheer
liveliness of Raimi's direction and
Campbell’s wit pull me back into this
medieval clash of good and evil. Cin6’s
latest midnight/ late show movie can
be summed up in one word: Groovy.
Start Friday (Cin6)
BLOOD CAR (NR) In the not-so-
distant, when gas in more than-$30
per gallon, mild-mannered elementary
school teacher Archie (Mike Brune)
invents an alternative fuel, and the sur
prise ingredient is human blood in this
indie horror film made in Atlanta. With
Anna Chlumsky (My Girt) and Katie
Rowlett. Directed by Alex Orr. Shows
Wednesday. 10/17 (Cin6)
THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM (PG-13)
Director Paul Greengrass returns with
a third entry that elevates the series’
threat level to midnight. Shot and
edited at a breakneck pace, Ultimatum
is bursting with brutal beatings, deadly
double crosses and revelations about
Bourne's (Matt Damon) past. (Georgia
Square 5)
THE CELLULOID CLOSET (R)
1995. Winner of a Peabody and an
award from Sundance, Rob Epstein
and Jeffrey Friedman's film, based *
on the book by Vito Russo, surveys
Hollywood’s depictions of gays and
lesbians and how Jhey have changed
over the years. Narrated by Lily
Tomlin, The Celluloid Closet also
won a Freedom of Expression Award
at Sundance, where it was up for the
Grand Jury Prize, and was nomi
nated for four Emmys. Sponsored by
the LGBT Resource Center. Shows
Monday, 10/22 (UGASLC)
THE COMEBACKS (PG-13) With
David Koechner (Anchorman, ‘Thank
You For Smoking, "The Daily Show") in
his first starring role, I had high hopes
until the trailer, which makes the flick
look like the ugly product of an orgy
between the Scary Movies and any
available inspirational sports film (the
comedy might as well be called Sports
Movid). The college football coach with
the sport's worst record tries to turn
things around with a ragtag team of
losers. With DJ Qualls, Robert Ri’chard
(Light It Up), Matthew Lawrence, and
what’s sure to be plenty of cameos.
Opens Friday (Beechwood, Carmike)
A CRUDE AWAKENING (NR) A
Crude Awakening is a documentary
that uncovers the ignorance and blind
faith most of the world lives with: that
oil will always be a viable resource,
fueling most of the world’s economy.
(Maggie Summers] Shows Wednesday,
10/17 (Cin6)
DRAGON WARS: O-WAR (PG-13)
How did this large cinematic turd
escape being flushed down the toilet
of the Sci Fi Channel’s Saturday night
movie and land a theatrical release?
Based on a Korean legend. Dragon
Wars is absolutely ludicrous, a bunch
of “What the hell?" exposition about
monsters destroying LA., strung
together by cheapo FX. Shows Friday,
Oct. 19-Sunday, Oct. 21 (Highway 17
Theatres)
EASTERN PROMISES (R) The plot of
David Cronenberg's latest is centered
on a midwife (Naomi W&tts), a baby girl
and a diary. The child (and the diary)
belong to a young Russian prostitute
who dies during childbirth. A clue
in the diary leads the midwife to the
Russian mob’s newest driver/ butcher,
Nikolai Luzhin (Viggo Mortensen).
Despite seeing someone get their
throat cut in the opening scenes,
there is surprisingly little gore for a
David Cronenberg film. However, the
fight scene where a nude Nikolai gets
jumped in a public bath is painfully
realistic. This film is filled with award
worthy performances, especially from
Mortensen and Watts. (Alex Moore]
Ends Thursday (Beechwood)
ELIZABETH: THE GOLDEN AGE
(PG-13) See Flick Skinny. Elizabeth:
The Golden Age shows just how hard
(and sexually frustrating) it is to be
queen, especially a Protestan! one in
the still predominantly Catholic Europe
of the 1580s Cate Blanchett's second
reign as Queen Elizabeth I is just as
monarchically absolute as her previ
ous Oscar-nominated one. but director
Shekhar Kapur's stunning film (this
picture's better seen than heard) is not.
As Philip II (Jordi Molld) readies for a
holy war. Liz is busy fighting off royal
suitors and fussing over the dreamy Sir
Walter Raleigh (a less-than-enthusiastic
Clive Owen), while her closest advisor,
Sir Francis Walsingham (Geoffrey Rush,
reprising his role from the 1999 Best
Picture nominee), is busy sniffing out
an assassination plot involving Mary -
Stuart (Samantha Morton), better known
as Mary, Queen of Scots. Through an
hour and a half of sudsy royal flirt
ing, Elizabeth: The Golden Age builds
to what should easily be a rousing
climax, the English upset of the mas
sive Spanish Armada, aq event which
unfolds neither stirringly nor compre
hensibly. Showtime* "The Tudors'
recounts this fascinating royal family*
saga with more historical acumen and
dramatic gusto. (Beechwood, Carmike)
FEEL THE NOISE (PG-13) Producer
J-Lo should have thrown a little extra
money into the film to buy some
originality. When Rob (Omarion
Grandberry) is sent to Puerto Rico to
live with his father, the wannabe rap
per and half-brother Javi compose a
thumping club hit that earns them a trip
to New York. Lots of dancing and some
catchy tunes. Ends Thursday (Carmike)
THE FILMS OF ELLIOTT EARLS
(NR) See Out There! for details on art
ist Elliott Earls’ Athens visit. His films
show continually tonight (for FREE!)
and he also performs. Shows Thursday,
10/18 (Cin6)
FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO
(NR) This documentary from first-time
‘ director Daniel G. Karslake examines
the ‘intersection of religion and homo
sexuality" in America. With Bishop
Desmond Tutu. Harvard* Peter Gomes,
Orthodox Rabbi Steve Greenberg and
Reverend Jimmy Creech. The film fea
tures five American Christian families
(like those of House Majority Leader
Richard Gephardt and Episcopalian
Bishop Gene Robinson) and how each
dealt with a child being gay. Nominated
for the Grand Jury Prize Documentary
at the 2007 Sundance Festival and
winner of the Audience Award for Best
Documentary at the Seattle International
Film Festival. Starts Friday (Cin6)
THE GAME PLAN (PG) Professional
football player Joe Kingman (Dwayne
' The Rock" Johnson) has only one
thing in mind—winning a champion
ship ring—until his daughter, sweet
little Peyton (Madison Pettis), is left on
his doorstep. The Game Plan needs an
MVP. While Johnson should be it. Joe
Kingman isn't. Blas6 characterization
does not a winning lead create. Kids
will love The Game Plan for two hours
and promptly forget it; parents could
do worse. (Beechwood, Carmike)
GOOD LUCK CHUCK (R) More
soft-core porn than actual comedy,
Good Luck Chuck fails in everything
it attempts. Chuck (Dane Cook) is
cursed: every girl he sleeps with falls
in love with the next man she dates.
This is all well and good until ne
meets the clumsy-yet-gorgeous Cam
(Jessica Alba), the qirl of his dreams,
and thus, must find a way to break the
curse. Riddled with vulgar sex jokes
and raunchy scenes. Chuck leaves its
audience feeling more violated than
amused. [Maggie Summers] Ends
Thursday (Beechwood, Carmike)
GONE BABY GONE (R) Turning
his attention back to working behind
the camera, Ben Affleck has a shot at
getting some of his buzz back in his
directorial debut. Based on a novel
by Dennis Lehane (he wrote the book
on which Mystic River was based),
Gone Baby Gone follows two cops
as they investigate the disappearance
of a four-year-old girl. With Casey
Affleck, Michelle Monaghan. Morgan
Freeman and Ed Harris. Opens Friday
(Beechwood, Carmike)
HALLOWEEN (R) Rob Zombie* rei
magining (for lack of a better term) of
John Carpenter* slasher classic rede
signs the entire concept of a remake.
Halloween is the franchise’s best effort
in nearly 30 years, and a fitting addition
to Zombie* brief, promising filmmaking
career. Shows Friday, Oct. 19-Sunday,
Oct. 21 (Highway 17 Theatres)
HARRY POTTER AND THE
GOBLET OF FIRE (PG-13) Where
HP3s Alfonso Cuardn energized the
series, /YP4 director Mike Newell
(Donnie Brasco) beefs it up. Clad in
English greys and blues. HP4 sees
Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert
Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson)
begin to grow up. Goblet of Fire is
terrifying—but not intensely enough
to scar the littlest wizards. Shows
Thursday, 10/18 (Tate)
HARRY POTTER & THE ORDER
OF THE PHOENIX (PG-13) 7YP5
begins with more danger and intrigue
than any previous Potter outing.
Voldemort’s resurrection has Harry
(Daniel Radcliffe) fighting for his life.
A solid, if not quite dazzling, transi
tion from HP4 to HP6, HP5 will not
disappoint hardcore Potterheads.
(Georgia Square 5); Shows Friday,
10/19-Sunday, 10/21 (Tate)
THE HEARTBREAK KID (R) The
Farrellys have returned to semi-form
with this raunchy remake of the 1972
Neil Simon comedy. Confirmed
bachelor Eddie Cantrow (Ben Stiller)
thinks he's met his soulmate (Malin
Ackerman), until a honeymoon in
Cabo, reveals the real girl of his dreams,
Miranda (Michelle Monaghan). The
Heartbreak Kid reacquaints the Farrellys
with the raunchy romance that made
There's Something About Mary so
wonderful. Kidmj not be as sweet as
Mary, but it is 3s grossly funny. Stiller
is back in top form, and the support
ing cast—Gerry Stiller, Rob Corddry,
Carlos Mencia and Miranda's entire
extended Southern family—charms.
(Beechwood, Carmike)
KOKO: A TALKING GORILLA (NR)
1977. Barbet Schroeder directed this
documentary about the “the world’s
most famous primate"- Koko the
gorilla, who was taught human com
munication through learning American
Sign Language at Stanford University.
Shows Thursday, 10/18 (ACC Library)
THE JANE AUSTEN BOOK CLUB
(PG-13) The Jane Austen Book Club
is an intriguing attempt at moderniza
tion. Maria Bello, Emily Blunt, Amy
Brenneman. Maggie Grace, Kathy
Baker and Hugh Dancy all confront
the romantic contrivances of Austen’s
19th-century characters. The Jane
Austen Book Club is jCTst another house
of passionate carps ready to be razed
and replaced^ the real deal. Ends
Thursday (Beechwood)
THE KINGDOM (R) Too jingoistic for
the left, not tough enough on terrorism
for the right, I'm sure many will find
ideological fault with this geopolitical
action thriller which contains the most
cathartic action I've seen in years.
After terrorists attack a U.S. housing
complex on Saudi Arabian soil, an FB I.
investigative team (Jamie Foxx, Jennifer
Garner, Chris Cooper, and Jason
Bateman) is given five days to assist
with the investigation. Peter Berg’s
fourth feature is an exemplar of action-
oriented, Hollywoodized cinema v6rite.
Ends Thursday (Beechwood, Carmike)
LAUGH FACTORY (NR) Yuck it up

stand-up comedy from the world-
