Monday, October 22
Holly Golightly &
The Brokeoffs,
Dave Marr,
OJ Kurt Wood
Tasty World
Fans of rock's
vintage roots should
head to Tasty World on
Monday night to see
U.K. songbird Holly
Golightly, a firecracker
performer with an ear
for harmonious garage
rock, rockabilly and
other American-music
tent poles. She used to
play with Kyra LaRubia
and Ludella Black in the U.K. girl group Thee Headcoatees, a high point of retro sound in the
'90s. The band delivered a sweet garage sound with invitingly disinterested lead vocals and
lush backing harmonies. Influenced by poet, author and cult musician Billy Childish, Golightly
dived into her musical career in the early 1990s; she's since released 13 albums and more than
15 singles on a wide variety of labels.
In fact, except for 2002, she has released a studio album, either solo or collaborative,
every year for more than a decade. Such prolificacy can result in an uneven output, and some
of the releases haven't quite captured the charm of her live performances. But she refined her
garage influences into a gritty, combustible sound on whiskey-drenched, utterly winning dark
rockers. Golightly has also received attention from some famous friends—she's the one you
hear in the White Stripes track "It's True That We Love One Another" off the album Elephant,
and Jim Jarmusch has used her music in some of his films.
Her new album is a stripped-down, mellower release that took the name You Can't Buy A
Gun When You're Crying. It's another collaborative piece, recorded with a dude who goes by
the name of Lawyer Dave, who plays up the rustic Texas angle with his public persona as The
Brokeoffs. They're jointly known as Holly Golightly & The Brokeoffs, and the album is more of
an exploration of wistful American country, packed with shuffling percussion, eerie slide guitar
and the intertwining echoes of both vocalists.
With local vinyl guru Kurt Wood deejaying on tonight's bill as well, there's a solid argument
being made that some of the freshest sounds can only be found by turning back the calendar.
[Chris Hassiotis]
“KARAOKE” (Mell’s) Every Friday.
KRUSH GIRLS (40 Watt) Dance num
bers of the 70s. ‘80s and ‘90s—and
today!—so shake it, shake it at the
dance party hosted by your ultra-
popular deejay Chris Bilheimer.
MAD WHISKEY GRIN (Flicker)
Alternating between six- and 12-string
guitar, local musician Frank Williams
slides and finger-picks his way through
bluesy and decidedly American sounds.
Lately he’s been experimenting with
new stuff (loops, e-bow, etc.) 8:30 p.m.
THE MAMMALS (Go Bar) No info
available, other than this is no/the
well-known California trad-folk quintet
of the same name.
MODERN VINTAGE MUSIC CO.
(Boar’s Head) Atlanta four-piece Zach
Carr (lead vocals, guitar, keys), John
Pritchett (bass, vocals), Jeff Spirko
(guitar, violin, mandolin, vocals) and
Nash Cantrell (drums) play rubbery,
sometimes-acoustic rock rooted heavily
in Stevie Wonder-style soul and funk,
sounding at times like Jamiroquai.
MONTANA SKIES (Melting Point)
From finger-picking American tradi
tional sounds to flamenco, the duo
Montana Skies—Jonathan Adams
on guitars and Jennifer Adams on
cellos—draws on new age and folk
influences.
KATE MORRISSEY (Flicker)
Morrissey's warm, soulful voice and
rhythmic piano spice her original
songs, which have been described as
“urban fables and fairy tales.' Her new
album is called Nobody, Too and it
features strong wordplay and dextrous
vocals. 8:30 p.m.
MP3J VINAL (Go Bar) After tonight’s
bands, Richard Vinal (of local hip-hop/
funk fusion act Bling the Children Back
Home) hosts the late-night eclectic
dance party that’ll draw on classic
favorites as well as the new Internet
hotness.
THE OAK RIDGE BOYS (Classic
Center Theater) Nashville's Oak Ridge
Boys have their roots in the 1940s,
when the Oak Ridge Quartet specialized
in country gospel. After many deaths
and retirements of original members,
the vocal-heavy band's current lineup
consists of baritones Duane Allen and
William Lee Golden, tenor Joe Bonsall
and bass Richard Sterban. Front Row
Seats is the latest album, released
last year.
PACKWAY HANDLE BAND (Farm
255) Packway's one-mic btuegrass
provides sly. hearty original songs
and renditions of classic tunes. The
local band has a new live EP out called
Live in 2006—Extreme, a follow-up
to the 2005 disc (Sinner) You Better
Get Ready.

jazz, blues and gospel' standards and
originals. 8 p.m.
SO SO DEATH (Go Bar) Atlanta duo

tion keeps the simple beat going while
heavy distorted bass guitar churns and
burbles over top, with moody, disaf
fected vocals occasionally turning into
hardcore-monster-voice.
TWIN POWERS (40 Watt) Dan Geller
(Kindercore Records. Ruby Isle, etc.)
has an affinity for spinning danceable
New Wave and Britpop tunes as well as
contemporary electro-rock dance stuff.
THEUMS (Caledonia) Men of
Science is the name of the new EP
from Tallahassee, FL, band The Urns.
It splits the difference between vibrant
power-pop and upbeat funk.
Saturday, Oct. 20
BOOMBOX (Georgia Theatre) Alabama
duo Zion Godchaux (guitar, vocals) and
Russ Randolph (turntables, samples)
form the duo BoomBox, creating atmo
spheric and polite light-rock influenced
by hip-hop and electronic music. The
new album’s called Visions Backbeat.
THE BRIDGES (Tasty World) This
Alabama family band—brothers,
sisters and cousins all—plays blissful
highway tunes in a golden 70s sort of
way. touching on Fleetwood Mac and
The Mamas & The Papas.
BUNNY CARLOS (Eastwood Pub)
Longtime Athenians Doug Pynn (guitar,
vocals). Bill Bokas (drums, vocals)
and Mike Flynn (bass) used to play as
Barking Charlie; after the death of one
member and the relocation of another,
the guys reformatted but still turn out
‘rock and roll the way it was meant to
be played,' says Flynn.
DEATH ON TWO WHEELS (Tasty
World) Leaning towards 70s rock
with prominent guitars, there's also a
little bit of later stuff at play—like Dire
Straits- and Huey Lewis-styled pop—
in this Atlanta band’s strutty tunes.
DJ BOBBY C (Loft) Hits from the ’80s,
*90$ and today, all night long. Every
Saturday.
OJ MARK BELL (8e's) Starting at 11
p.m. every Friday and Saturday, local
deejay Mark Bell focuses on the dan
der sounds of 20 years ago.
DJ SCORPION, PhD. (Level) Local
deejay spins a set of industrial and
electronic music.
DJRX (Rumor) The local deejay plays
party tracks, mainly current pop with
old-school and country accents, many
of which are his own remixes. Every
Friday and Saturday.
FAIRMOUNT FAIR (Caledonia) This
“deluxe emcee duo’ rocks the mics like
few other locals. Energetic and sincere,
the duo proves that underground rap
can be fun without having to be ironic
and self-referentially pretentious.
GEMINI CRICKET (Caledonia)
Started as a duo a year ago, expanded
to a trio last fall and ballooned to a
quartet as of this past spring, Gemini
Cricket plays adorably hand-hewn
bedroom pop that's likably comfy and
sprinkled with kazoo and accordion.
GUFF (Skate Park of Athens) This
non-stop local punk quartet’s style
harkens back to the Lookout Records
sound of about a decade-and-a-half
ago, with a sense of fun amidst the
noise. The band released its new album
Symphony of Voices in June. Playing
as part of a day-long “bike jam' event
Harvest Jam ‘07.
MARC HARRIS (Boar’s Head) This
long-time Athenian plays a guitar-
strong type of comfortable modern
rock. Tonight, Harris performs a
stripped-back affair, perhaps with a
small backing group?
“KARAOKE" (Alibi) Every Saturday.
“KARAOKE" (Mell’s) Every Saturday.
L.A. TOOL & DIE (Caledonia)
Charlotte, NC, indie band L.A. Tool &
Die plays whimsical, upbeat pop rock
and roll. It's sincerely rousing and
ebullient, and hey, they name-check Elf
Power in one of their tunes, so that’s
worth a few cool points, yeah?
“LATE NITE DISCO" (Go Bar) The
house deejay spins a cool mix of disco,
New Wave and modern dance tunes for
a sweaty and energetic crowd. Every
Saturday, 10 p.m.
LAURA REED & DEEP POCKET
(Georgia Theatre) Polyrhythmic
grooves and slinky, smoky R&B make
up the bulk of the offerings of Laura
Reed & Deep Pocket. Guitarist-vocalist
Reed, born in South Africa and living
in Boone, NC, has a peppy delivery
that has drawn comparisons to Erykah
Badu, and her band—Ryan Burnz
(keys). Ben Didelot (bass) and Barrett
Helms (drums)—is tight and funky.
LONG LEGGED WOMAN (40 Watt)
Vaguely drony and mostly noisy,
the duo of Gabo Vodicka and Justin
Flowers plays music that’s half-impro
vised. half-composed, and any given
performance is rarely like the band's
last one. The band's expanded to a
quartet recently; the newest EP is called
Newtown Nights.
LOOPMASTER JOHN & DAVID
WRIGHT (Wild Wing Cafe) Local
guitarist John Elliott loops his guitar
and covers rap classics like Fat Joe’s

hop. Also expect some Tom Petty, Jack
