Atlanta duo slings out some easygoing,
rock-intiuenced, psychedelic bluegrass
and jazz sitting firmly in the newgrass
category.

(Borders) Athens ’ own Carl Rapp and
Julia McDermott play tradilional Celtic
music, including Irish reels, toe-tapping
jigs, hornpipes and waltzes. 2 p.m.

GReece) performs a set of his honky-
tonkin’ tunes that always seem to put
a smile on the faces of everyone in the

musician Jett Soileau (pronounced
“swallow") performs New Age finger-
style acoustic guitar, drawing from
influences Michael Hedges. Phil
Keaggy and the Beatles. He’s playing at

TOMMY SOMERVILLE (Farm 255)
Pianist-saxophonist-guitarist-vocalist
Tommy Somerville is best known to
Athens audiences from his time with
jazz crew Squat, but he also plays his
own solo tunes ranging from jazz to
blues and a little bit ol contemporary
rhythmic stuff. 8 p.m.
VINYL STRANGERS (Kingpins) The
Vinyi Strangers play classic-sounding
pop rock reminiscent of early Beatles
and Byrds, and this is the band’s
second show of the weekend. Tonight
they're playing at 10:30 p.m. for the
Classic City Rollergirls after-bout party.

A TALE OF TWO CALEYS (Jittery
Joe's Five Points) Local guys Caley
Smith and Caley Ross "sounds like
a science-fiction folk musical." The
quirky lyrics address meta- and astro-
physical concerns, and feature a heavy
amount of French and Greek wordplay.
Playing as part of the Stuart Fleisher art
opening. 6 p.m.
CASADOS (Mercury Lounge) The
Illinois duo of Nic and Heather Dillon
jre at the heart of Casados, and other
members come, go and augment the
performances. The group plays gentle,
acoustic indie tolk on its new album
p assages. Free shew!
DJ KURTWOOD (40 Watt) Man with
the vinyl plan Kurt Wood spins an
early-evening set of garageadelic rock
and soul tunes from the '50s and '60s.
FOLKLORE (Mercury Lounge) It's
not a week in Athens if Folklore's not
playing, though word is you may not
be able to catch the band again until
January or so. Guitarist Jimmy Hughes
(Elf Power) turns out his own band to
deliver fuzzy pop songs that break from
the mold by taking a pseudo-myihical
storytelling route. A new release is
forthcoming.
HOLLY GOLIGHTLY & THE
BROKE-OFFS (Tasty World) Talented
UK songbird Holly Golightly spent the
early part of the last decade in the Billy
Childish side group Thee Headcoatees.
Her own music stretches beyond rock
and before rock, incorporating rocka
billy, girl group sounds and a bluesy
folk tone that’s earthy, primal and true.
The Broke-Offs is the project of a Texas
musician called Lawyer Dave, and he’ll
play a solo set of his Americana tunes ‘
before teaming up with Holly for a joint
effort. See Box.
DAVE MARR (Tasty World) The
former Star Room Boys singer with
the resonantly deep country twang
performs a set ol tunes opening for
Holly Golightly; whether he’ll be solo
or backed by some buddies is unclear,
but it's a can't-miss gig to catch the
infrequently performing Dave Marr.

Texas trio of Ortiz brothers—Jim (gui
tar. vocals). Chris (drums) and Gian
(bass, vocals)—play rough-edged
blues-influenced classic rock, and
should appeal to fans of Deep Purple,
ZZ Top and Cream.
BORIS (40 Watt) Boris one-ups the
Melvins by enlivening its sludge with
some truly mind-blowing guitar work.
The squeal on last year's album Pink
recalls classic psych-rock like Love
and Jimi Hendrix as well as experi
mental space-rock; the bombast is
reined in, however, on the new album
Rainbow, a collaboration with guitarist
Michio Kurihara. who also perlorms
with 'em tonight
BRIDGE & TUNNEL (Little Kings)
Melodic. early-2000s-sounding indie
rock from New York. Anthemic vocals,
strong harmonies, non-stop rhythm
section: tans of Athens band Winter
Sounds may dig this.
DAMON & NAOMI (40 Watt) The
former Galaxie 500 rhythm section of
Damon Krukowski and Naomi Yang
team up with former Ghost guitarist
Michio Kurihara to create some seri
ously intimate music. Within These

MELISSA FERRICK (Georgia
Theatre) Boston's Melissa Ferrick spent
much of the past decade defining her
position as an “alternative’ singer-

folk-inlluenced albums. Her new one is
Live at Union Hall, a live follow-up to
last year's In the Eyes ot Strangers.
HONEY (Tasty World) Local songwriter
J.S. Dillard fronts the infrequently
performing band Honey. If you're into
swell classic rock like Creedence, the
Faces, T. Rex. the Stones and Tom
Petty, you'll find a lot to like with the
path Dillard & Co. have chosen.
RYAN HORNE (Caledonia) Love &
War is the new release from Marietta’s
Ryan Home, a songwriter who focuses
on funky acoustic R&R-intluenced pop-
