Hiroshima Survivor
Takashi Teramoto
UGA Chapel
Abstract theoretical
debates about nuclear
proliferation will be made
gut-wrenchingly tangible
when Takashi Teramoto
visits Athens to deliver
his first-person account
of surviving the atomic
bomb. Teramoto, one of Hiroshima in the aftermath of the 1945 atomic
approximately 250,000
still living hibakusha (the Japanese term for bomb survivors or, literally, "explosion-
affected people"), was 10 years old when "Little Boy" was dropped on Hiroshima on Aug.
6, 1945. Teramoto now travels across the world on behalf of the Hiroshima Peace Culture
Foundation and uses his personal experience as a fifth-grader living one kilometer away
from the explosion's hypocenter to promote nuclear disarmament.
The UGA Japan Club and UGA Students for Peace will host a free presentation from
Teramoto and Steven Leeper, chairman of the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation, at the
UGA Chapel on Jan. 16 at 6:30 p.m.
Leeper, an American, is the first non-Japanese citizen to head the Hiroshima memo
rial foundation, and he aims to spread Japan's anti-nuclear weapon: philosophy across
the globe. At the forefront of Leeperis activism is his argument that peace proponents
must move beyond sentimentality in order to make substantive progress towards disman
tling atomic and nuclear weapons programs, according to press materials announcing the
event. He urges those who are emotionally moved to recognize that being cognizant of
the horrific aftermath of Hiroshima and Nagasaki is only half the battle. "If we are going
to graduate from a war culture to a peace culture," Leeper argues, "we're going to have
to be a little more hardheaded on how we go about it."
To accompany the visit from Teramoto and Leeper, UGA's Tate Center Gallery will
feature an exhibit of 30 posters from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum that dis
play the devastation of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the wake of the bombings. The
exhibit is open to the public through Jan. 19. In addition, the 30-minute documentary
film Hiroshima, A Mother's Prayer will be screened in Room 147 of the UGA Student
Learning Center on Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. Admission is free. [Jennifer Bryant]
