Martin Luther King
Day of Service
Various Locations
Six years ago, a sur
prisingly large group
of volunteers-for-a-day
from across Athens
came together on Martin
Luther King Day and gave
a then-fledgling project
to restore East Athens'
historic Gospel Pilgrim
Cemetery just the jump-
start it needed. People
pulled litter, overgrowth
and an untold number of
used tires out of the neglected burial ground that day, opening the door to a preserva
tion push that has seen Gospel Pilgrim's condition improve by leaps and bounds in tne
past few years.
That single day's service project also jump-started Athens' participation in the nation
wide MLK Day of Service—an effort toward concentrated volunteerism meant to heed
Dr. King's words that "Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve." In 2007,
more than 600 volunteers—a record turnout—worked at seven sites scattered across
town; organizers are hoping for at least as many participants this year, says Art Ordoqui,
chair of the Day of Service and Director of Community Programs for Hands On Northeast
Georgia.
They've got room for more helpers, too: the list of projects is at 14 and still growing
at press time. In addition to Gospel Pilgrim, the Brooklyn and Spalding cemeteries need
clearing of overgrowth, as does the North Oconee River Greenway; painting and land
scaping are on the docket at five Clarke County schools; the Brooklyn community garden
needs preparation for spring; and—new this year—both Project Safe's thrift store and
BikeAthens' bike recycling headquarters will get some help just keeping things organized.
Though organizers had been worried that the ongoing drought would limit the scope of
landscaping projects, Ordoqui says the impact—though felt—is turning out to be less
than initially thought, in part because much of what's needed is simply clearing of over
growth. Also, volunteers will install rain barrels at outdoor project sites. Some landscap
ing projects will be scaled back, though.
In a change from previous years' procedures, the organizers ask volunteers to reg
ister for specific projects ahead of time—via www.AthensMLKDay.org cr by calling
706-353-1313—and start the day at their site rather than gathering at a morning kick
off. Projects will run from 9 a.m. to noon, with lunch for volunteers from noon to 1 p.m.
at the Lyndon House Arts Center, and a community celebration from 1 to 3 p.m. also at
the Lyndon House. Athens Transit will provide free trips to project sites from the Lyndon
House for those who need them. [Ben Emanuel]
