The Lefty Williams Band
Melting Point
Atlanta guitarist Jason
"Lefty" Williams plays the blues
like a pro, but that doesn't mean
Williams is about to start singing
them when it comes to adversi
ties he's faced in life. Williams
was born without the lower por
tion of his right arm. However,
from the time he first picked up
a guitar at four, the fella they
call "Lefty" had his sights set
on more than simply strumming
basic chords on the upside-down
axe.
Williams progressed at a rapid
pace for a young, right-handed
guitarist. But, when taking
into consideration he's a player
with no right hand to speak of,
instead using a tightly fastened
band on his right arm that holds
a pick, his accomplishments are all the more impressive. Since graduating with honors
from the Atlanta Institute of Music, Williams' style has morphed from the intense death
metal-style shredding of his teens to heavy power-rock to the bluesy, semi-psychedelic
sound he carries today.
If Williams' second release, Snake Oil, is any indicator, the good-natured guitarist
and bandleader has found his niche. Taking the introspective lyrical approach to 2006's
Big Plans a step further, the album reunites Williams with Athens producer John Keane.
The result is a concise, uncomplicated record driven by a little more jazz influence than
last time around, but with plenty of hard-rocking barroom blues still in pocket. Williams
also proves himself a fine vocalist whose unfancied singing style is reminiscent of Bottle
Rockets frontman Brian Henneman. Onstage and on record, Williams is joined by drummer
Steve Saunders and bassist Ray Dombrowski.
Tonight Williams will be opening up for fellow blues hound Rick Fowler. Those who dig
the smoky, stingy blues licks of guys like Ellis, Walter Trout or Derek Trucks are advised to
show up early.. Just don't forget to tell 'em, "Lefty sent ya." [Michael Andrews]
