Here we are for another round at the water cooler where
you get all the latest dope on the happenings in the world of
Athens music. Keep that water cool, though. We're gonna need
it. And, with that, off we go...
Bonnaroo on Friday, June 13, and I'm sure there're more than
a few of you heading to that. For all other Truckers-based
information, please see www.drivebytruckers.com.
> Instant Karma: Always ones to think
of their fans, Chris McKay & the Critical
Darlings have made their long-awaited (and
oft-rumored) album Satisfactionista avail
able digitally as a precursor to the album's
physical release. For $5.99 you can download
the whole album, and for $8.99 you can
download it now and receive a hard copy
when the physical copies are manufactured.
Indeed, the sale of the downloads will con
tribute to the cost of the manufacturing. To
grab your piece of the action, drop a line to
the band via www.myspace.com/criticaldarlings
set up with payment information, etc.
Got a Story? Tell It: Nug's Space, Uzupis Theatre Company
and b. Productions are currently conducting preliminary
interviews for an upcoming docu
mentary about the late Athens
musician and songwriter Nuq
Phillips—specifically, those people
who were affected by Phillips'
death and those who have been
impacted by Linda Phillips' cre
ation of Nugi's Space. Also, those
who have well-formed opinions or
thoughts concerning the impact
Nugi's Space has had on the Athens
community are asked to contribute.
The main criterion is that the sto
ries need to both continue Nuci's
memory and also provide support
to help others better live their
lives. The interviews will be con
ducted in 20-minute increments on
Saturdays from 12-3 p.m. on the
following dates: June 14 and 21;
July 12; August 2, 9, 16 and 23.
Please contact Brandon Deyette
via info@uzupistheatre.com to
schedule an interview. For all other
information, please visit their web
site: www.nuci.org.
The Winners Are Almost In: Yeah, John Keane
the voting season is over, the
ballots have been tallied, and the winners are now known to
only a very few. However, while you're wringing your hands
over whether your band is getting one of the coveted 2008
Flagpole Music Awards, you can check out the list of finalists
on page 20. Also, remember that the awards show happens this
year on Thursday, June 19 at the Morton Theatre, and tickets
are $8 in advance and $10 at the door, but only $5 if you
already have an AthFest wristband. The confirmed performers
this year are: Twin Tigers, Spring Tigers, C-Fre$h, The Buddy
System, The Redcoats Drumline, Moyuba
and David Blackmon. Also, Kenosha Kid !
will be the orchestra pit band playing all i
the clever "awards show" bumper music. The g
powers that be tried to make the lineup as ^
diverse as possible, too, so that's why there's
such a mix of stuff. Who knows? Maybe you'll
get turned onto something you've never
heard before, and that should be the whole
idea of AthFest, right?
Diggin' Up Bones: Also appearing at this year's Bonnaroo
are longtime Bonnaroo-dudes Widespread Panic. But that's
not what I wanted to tell you. The real news is that the first
release from the band's "from the
vault" series appeared in record
stores this week. The recording
is a live show from Carbondale,
IL which was recorded at the
Southern Illinois University
Arena on Dec. 1, 2000. Thus,
the record is appropriately titled
Carbondale 2000. (Remember when
the term "2000" used to seem so
futuristic? Yeah, me too.) This
show features all original mem
bers of the band and, as such,is
very special. In live Panic news,
the band will perform relatively
close to home on July 25 and 26
in Charlotte, NC at the Verizon
Wireless Amphitheater and tick
ets are on sale now. For anything
” else you might need, head over to
www.widespreadpanic.com.
< King to King: Local readers
might be interested to know that
local musician Bart King has pub
lished a nice interview with Athens
recording legend John Keane in
the May/June issue of TapeOp
Magazine. While you may be able
to read this over at www.tapeop.com, I would encourage you,
rather, to go actually buy a copy and support print media,
dammit. It's a fine piece of writing and gives a lengthy look
into the history of Keane and the Athens music scene.
Drink Up, People: Local songster Ken Will Morton will perform
a free show at the Terrapin Brewery on Saturday, June, 14.
Local band Dubconscious just played there last week, too. I
swear, there's music in every crevice of this town. Morton's
Chris McKay & the Critical Darlings
and you'll be show will happen from 2-5 p.m., and details should be pro
cured from either www.terrapinbeer.com or www.myspace.com/
kenwillmorton.
No Oil Crisis Here: Drive-By Truckers will see their newest
album, Brighter Than Creation's Dark, released on vinyl by the
end of this month. The street date for the package is June 24,
and it should be available wherever you buy your vinyl records.
If you don't know where that is, I'm sure the band can point
you in the right direction, if you ask them nicely. In other
news, the Truckers won't be playing anywhere close to here
for several months, but will appear at Manchester, TN festival
As always, be sure to keep your news coming in, and always
mention either Threats & Promises or my name in the subject
line of all emails. I don't wanna walk around with you via email
to music@flagpole.com, voicemail at 706-549-9523, ext. 203,
or by post to P.O. Box 1027, Athens, GA, 30603.
