With one full-length
album released and practi
cally five albums' worth
of unreleased material,
Roanoke, VA band The Young
Sinclairs is nothing if not
prolific. This wealth of mate
rial is especially surprising
considering the band has
been together less than
three years. The band (Samuel Lunsford on guitar and vocals, Daniel Cundiff on bass and
vocals, Sean Poff on guitar and vocals, John Thompson on drums and Jonathan Woods
on keys and vocals) has found a new potential benefactor in the form of Athens label
Kindercore Records. Label owner Ryan Lewis had been communicating with The Young
Sinclairs online, and a relationship that should lead to the band releasing material on
the label was born. "They've got over four finished albums and a ton of b-sideS," says
Lewis. "We'll release it all at some point."
That's a pretty solid vote of confidence and a deserved one, too. So far, The Young
Sinclairs have showcased, via their album Feel Bad, an excellent brand of intelligent, psy
chedelic rock that runs the gamut between 13th Floor Elevators freak-outs and Galaxie
500 gentleness.
The band is part of an association of like-minded musicians known as The Magic Twig
Community, and the members of The Young Sinclairs make up large parts of many of
that collective's other bands. Indeed, the entire collective numbers approximately eight
people! Still, the band seems determined to impress upon us that The Young Sinclairs
are only a small part of the total artistic output made by The Magic Twig Community.
That may be* so, but this week in Athens they're undoubtedly the most important part.
