Kebert Xela, My
Milky Way Arms
Caledonia Lounge
Kebert Xela is a band that
must be seen live. While the
lush, electronic, post-rock
soundscapes are pleasant and
sweeping on record, the live
execution will leave your jaw
on the floor. The dynamic duo
of Doug Saylor and Chris Howe plays more instruments during one song that an aver
age four : piece. Running from station to station like rock gladiators, Saylor and Howe
pick up an instrument, play a killer riff, turn some knobs, push some buttons and then
they're off to the next stop while the computers keep the instrumentation on repeat.
Amid the chaos, somehow, gorgeous melodies manifest—gradually building up, one live-
programmed layer at a time.
Unlike other electronic duos, like Fuck Buttons for example, Kebert Xela appreciates
the importance of organic sound. Underneath the digital robotics, Saylor usually ends up
behind the drum kit, adding a rich texture that prevents Kebert Xela from ever sounding
too tinny or one-dimensional.
Over the course of a set, you'll see Howe head-bang wildly as he bends circuits, drops
beats, sings and plays on the guitar, piano, lap-steel, bass and whatever else is hid
den in his corner. Meanwhile, Saylor has his own arsenal of guitars, bass, synth, drums
vocoder and beats.
While the band might have an unconventional approach, these aren't ambient experi
mental tracks. There are driving bass lines and memorable melodies here that speak to
rock and electronic music fans alike.
This might be one of the most underrated bands in town, and it's unfortunate the duo
has kept such a low profile since forming in 2006. Hopefully, the nomination for Flagpole's
award for best electronic band will help raise awareness. In the meantime, look out for a
new EP from the band which should be out now. [Michelle GiLzenrat]
