MUSIC NEWS AND GOSSIP
the band's two newest recorded goods. The first is the full-
length album Hostile Takeover and the other is an EP named
Fire and Why? which is composed of multiple versions of
Harry Nilsson's "Jump into the Fire" and Yoko Ono's "Why?"
► Hit It Again: Allison Weiss has
proven herself to be one of the hard
est working musicians in this town. To
wit, she's headed on yet another tour
with her brother A.J. Weiss. This time
she'll visit the deep regions of Georgia
and Alabama, northern Florida and both
Carolinas. She'll play a tour kickoff show
on Saturday, June 28 over at Go Bar,
and this will be the last time locals
can catch her until she hits the Flicker
Theatre & Bar on July 19. Go wish her
well, and visit www.allisonw.com for
full tour details and other Weiss-mania.
Yeah, I know. This is the week when everyone holes up at
home because AthFest took it all out of them. There should be
at least a couple of things in this week's news, though, that
will lure you out of your heat-'n'-hangover-induced stupor. Get
lured below...
An Epic At Best
working on a new project together and vocalist Lou Rodriguez
is currently writing material for a solo outing. I wish all of
them the best of luck and look forward to what will come out
of this. Remember the good times Over at www.myspace.com/

Dude!: Although drummer Jason Jones has moved back to
Murfreesboro, TN, the pair of rockers known as Smokedog
continues to rock Athens. Jones, along with guitarist Thom
Stricklan, played twice in town last week and have completed
Smokedog released 11 recordings in 2007 and is on track to
release seven more in 2008. Should we encourage the 'dog?
Yes, we should. Start doing this over at www.myspace.com/
smokedogifeelalrightifeelalright.
The Needle Is the Record: Local band Scarlet Snow began
recording its newest EP last week in Nashville, TN. The record
ing, to be titled The Needle, is being recorded by engineer
Chris Combs of Athens band The Sum. Scarlet Snow will also
do some tracking of drums and bass over at Athens-based
Japanski Recording Studio. To keep the curious up to date
on the EP's progress, the band has started a blog which will
feature sneak peeks at recording sessions, etc. When the whole
thing is finished, Scarlet Snow is going to make it available
as a free download. Keep up to date with the band over at
www.downloadtheneedle.com or www.scar-
letsnow.com.
< Last Chance for Real: Although I thought
this would never happen, the good news
has come down that long-dormant Athens
band An Epic at Best will play one final
show on Saturday, July 5 at the Caledonia
Lounge. Although the band had gained
significant ground a few years back via
its heartrending piano-based pop tunes,
which gained some additional heft when
the band added guitarist Roy Coughlin to
its lineup, An Epic at Best pretty much
ground to a halt when leader Robert
Gunn moved to France. Gunn will spend
this summer in Athens, though, and with
Coughlin's impending departure from
town this seemed like the perfect, if only,
time for the band to play together again.
Unbelievably, the band will celebrate the
release of its final recording, an EP named
Spelling Sounds, this night which is being
released courtesy of the label Two Sheds
Music. If anything, this show will be a
great way to say "goodbye" to a band that
has paid its dues, done its time and is ready to move on.-

Perennial Spencer: I guarantee you've
seen him around, but you may have
never heard him play. Maybe you should.
His name is Spencer Rich; and while
he has been playing his own music
in Athens for well over a decade, he's Allison Weiss
just joined several bands in the past
couple of years. Most recently, he became the drummer for local
group The Flowers of Evil that will play the Caledonia Lounge
on Wednesday, June 25. Rich has been clearing the decks, so
to speak, of much of the material he's recorded over the past
several years, and now his release titled Spencer's Moods: The
Best of Spencer Rich 1993-2006 is available digitally via iTunes,
Emusic and Amazon.com. Go visit him at www.myspace.com/
spencerrich, and see what you think.
Both Hands Say It's Over: One of my favorite Atlanta/Athens
bands has called it quits. Although it never really gained a
foothold here in town. One Hand Loves the Other was an
infectious and gorgeous blend of chamber and classically influ
enced electro-pop which I came to enjoy very much. Members
Mikey Johnson, Nancy Shim and Mary Knight are reportedly
