It used to be that

let's be friends (or at

showcased gratuitous
solos and their debt
to the Grateful Dead
night after night, and
the spinning kids in
perpetual bliss loved it.
Is today's increasingly cynical, if not equally intoxicated, world ready to reclaim its grin
and begin to spin all over again?
At the turn of this century, Albany, GA's favorite sons, Ancient Harmony, carved out
a modest yet comfortable niche in hippiedom before calling it quits. When a three-year
hiatus ended in November 2005 during a festival reunion gig at Down on the Farm II in
Quincy, FL, the band (drummer/vocalist Chad Jackson, keyboardist Tony Giordano, bass
ist Steve Patton and guitarist/vocalist Shell Stamps) decided to recapture the magic and
whittle that niche once again.
When asked about the Ancient Harmony hiccup, Jackson admits, "Everyone had per
sonal things they had to attend to, and now we've come back to the band stronger...
We really- enjoy each other's company, and it's been great laughing together and having
everyone in a good place.'
Obviously, touring is a jam band's bread and butter. Considering the present state of
the planet, in both environmental and economic terms, what's Ancient Harmony's current
strategy for exporting the jams? "We're relaxed and enjoying a slow-growth approach,"
chuckles Jackson. "We're trying to keep everything close to home. Gas, being a big rea
son, and of course—gas, gas, gas... We'll keep it regional and do it smart." So, should
we consider Ancient Harmony a band of radical environmentalists? "We're not a bunch of
tree buggers. We all really care, but we could be doing more and probably will be as we
hit the road more and more." [David Eduardo]
