Let's use
this space to
advance the
notion that
the Drive-By
Truckers have
single-handedly
raised the
Southern
rock bar to
heights other like-minded artists will never attain, and in doing so have rendered
their contemporaries obsolete. To be fair, after immersing in the DBT catalog, even the
most irrefragable redneck appetite would be satiated, no? It could be argued that the
Athens-by-way-of-Muscle Shoals band is responsible for the renaissance and simultane
ous marginalization of the genre... But that was before Lauderdale, their 20-something
neighbors from the Shoals, independently released their self-titled debut in 2007.
The quartet, composed of Niles Lee on vocals and guitar, Patrick McDonald on drums,
bassist Corey Hannah and recent addition lead guitarist Daniel Stoddard, isn't reluctant
to carry the flag. "Even if I wasn't from northwest Alabama, I'd gravitate to this kind of
music because it's just so honest and genuine," says Hannah.
For better or worse, an artist has his entire life to cull from when selecting the
inspiring moments that become the basis for the songs that ultimately find their way
onto the first record. That belief is undoubtedly supported after just a cursory listen to
Lauderdale's initial offering. The group takes stabs at chicken-fried anthem rock ("Wasted
Life"), pure country ("Take Me Home"), and a Counting Crows-esque brand of acoustic
pop balladry ("The Edge"). Did the band feel compelled to run the gamut immediately,
for fear there may not be a second chance to make another impression? Or, is manic,
rural creativity what Lauderdale is all about? "Maybe a little of both," admits Hannah.
"Most of the first record were Niles' songs, and the band would fill in their parts. While
tracking the record, certain songs took different directions. On the new record (a work-
in-progress] it's a little different. We're all playing a bigger role. It's really exciting, really
encouraging." [David Eduardo]
