Athens Bawg Derby
The Classic Center
This weekend you can watch
the fur fly—and catch, twist and
turn. The fur is attached to amazing
canine athletes in single-minded
pursuit of a tennis ball. This is not
your typical backyard game of fetch.
These dogs form teams of four, rac
ing another team head-to-head down
a lane in relay-race fashion, clearing
four hurdles, tripping a box which
releases a tennis ball, snatching
the ball in mid-air, bounding into a
four-footed turn, and flying off to
leap the hurdles to the finish line.
The first team who runs all four dogs
to the finish line without error wins
the heat.
Athens' own Double Dog Dare is
the host club for this two-day com
petition at the Classic Center. This
highly entertaining event is the Second Annual Athens Dawg Derby flyball tournament.
Flyball is the name of the activity, said to be the fastest-growing dog sport in the coun
try. Some 53 teams from seven states will compete, which means that over 250 dogs of
all shapes and sizes will be waiting to whip through the course and show what they've
got. Although some breeds are represented more than others (such as border collies and
Jack Russell terriers), all may compete; the smaller dbgs in a team match-up determine
the hurdle height. Expect some amusing size combinations, with equal determination and
fun throughout. Despite such intense competition, "fun" is the operative word. A dog is
happy with its ball, despite its score, and human team members are tickled to be running
under such creative monikers as Fetchin' Frenzi and Chattanooga Chomp.
Admission is free for both days of the Athens Dawg Derby flyball tournament,
Saturday and Sunday, July 12 and 13, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Classic Center.
The UGA Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association, SCAVMA, will
be running a raffle for goodies for both four-legged and two-legged ticket holders. For.
