Improv Athens
Cin6
The best thing about
improv is you never see the
same show twice. Being
funny isn't easy, and being
funny on the fly is an even
greater challenge, one that
local group Improv Athens is
eager to take on. The troupe
was founded by Amy Roeder,
a grad student in the UGA
theatre department. Roeder*
has recently performed with
the world-famous sketch
comedy/ improv group
Second City in a special
regional show at the Alliance
Theatre in Atlanta. Second
City is known as the launch
ing pad for such interna
tional stars as Mike Myers,
Chris Farley and Tina Fey,
among others.- Perhaps we will see some future stars in this local ensemble.
The group itself is comprised totally of UGA students—both undergrad and graduate.
According to troupe member George Akers, the shows typically feature short-form impro
visation—you know, the fun games you see on "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" However, the
group has been experimenting with long-form improv as well, in which scenes are driven
by character and story rather than game elements.
"The show on Wednesday is our first official sketch comedy show written, directed
and performed by university students," says Akers. "The sketch was brought about for a
couple of reasons. First, as the acting director of the troupe this semester (due to Amy's
busy schedule during the Second City show) I wanted the troupe to expand its scope into
the fun of sketch comedy. I've always loved 'SNL' and sketch comedy in general, and the
fact that sketch goes hand-in-hand with improv prompted me to put on this show. Also,
it's my senior seminar project for my theatre major."
I bet you all wished you majored in theatre now! Who knew getting laughs could be
part of your education? The show costs $5 and is scheduled to begin promptly at 7 p.m.
