Wax Fang
Tasty World
Raise the snifter of
Jameson to your lips,
breathe in the nutty
accents of the bouquet,
then make it disappear
in a swift, full-tilt gulp
before tossing the glass
into the roaring fireplace.
Flash a mad, dental-
hygienisfs-nightmare grin,
then break the empty bottle on top of your own head. Welcome to La La Land (Don't Panic
Records), the refreshingly fierce and instantly familiar album from Louisville, KY-based
power trio Wax Fang. 4 > ; :
Don't let their decidedly Dixie home address mislead you—Scott Carney (vocals/
guitar), Jake Heustis (bass) and Kevin Ratterman (drums) are carrying a torch that was
lit years ago, somewhere across the pond. "If you were to take a snapshot of my record
collection, you'll find a lot of British, progressive rock music—Brian Eno, Roxy Musk and
David Bowie, especially,” shares Carney, adding, "Naturally, growing up, I was surrounded
by Skynyrd and had friends in high school and grade school that were into The Allman;
Brothers... but I-found that I just don't relate to [Southern rock]. There may be an hon
esty and sincerity to it but... it's been done to death."
Wax Fang brings a certain je ne sais quoi that its dirty Southern brethren lack, and
thankfully, La La Land was picked up by a distributor and given a proper national release
in October. Now we can all delight in a sound that combines the palpable intensity of
The Pogues and Sex Pistols with the experimental edge of King Crimson, and on "The
Doctor Will See You Now," hedge-trimming shears.
You may also notice musicians of local band The Whigs thanked in thelo La Land
liner notes. Turns out a two-week run in March '07 resulted in lasting friendships, both
personal and professional. Carney, a Pittsburgh Filmmakers Institute alum, recently
directed and edited the video for The Whigs' "Like a Vibration." [David Eduardo]
