Larkin Grimm
Tasty World
Larkin Grimm's and
impossibly peculiar
biography informs much
of her mystical songwrit
ing. Perhaps all artists
are outsiders to some
degree, but Grimm was
bom into another world
within our world—her
family joined The Holy
Order of MANS commune
(Grimm says "commune/
most would say "cult")
in the Grant Park neigh
borhood of Atlanta wher
she was just two. There
her parents were each
allowed a meager $7
per week allowance to
survive, and everything else was shared. She was surrounded by "acid casualties, hippies
and spiritual seekers" who had faith that the universe would take care of all their needs.
Despite these utopian views, Grant Park in the '80s was a rough neighborhood. "I saw a
number of people get killed as a child because there was a crack-house next door," says
Grimm. "My mother was tired of explaining dead bodies to me... so she decided to take
the kids into the mountains." The family moved up to Dahlonega where her dad opened
a music store and Grimm lived among "Georgia hillbillies" until being accepted into Yale
University.
"I was in total shock," says Grimm of moving from humble Appalachia into h«»r new Ivy
League surroundings. "I didn't want to be indoctrinated by the Yale system... I felt like
rather than teaching us to be wise and intelligent, it was teaching us to be good liars."
Grimm sought some kind of escape and solace in the basement squash court on cam
pus where she locked herself in the room, turned off all the lights, took psychedelic drugs
and sang. This was her first foray into musical expression, and she later found catharsis
in the hardcore and noise rock scene. Today her mystical musings on struggle, sex and
power play over droning, textured acoustics created by Grimm's unusual open tunings.
The new album, Parplor, is out on the adventurous label Young God. [Michelle Gilzenrat]
