MICHAEL GOETHE
She had stayed at my church two months pre
viously. This program puts a lot of emphasis
on respecting the guests' privacy, so I was
unsure if I should approach her. I was relieved
when she approached me and told me that she
had gotten an apartment, and that she was
doing well at her job. She also said that she
was having problems with one of her children,
but that they were taking a course together
to work things out. That is what this program
can do. IHN is currently selling calendars for
$15, featuring artwork of the local churches.
You can buy one by calling the IHN day center
at 706-425-1881, or send a donation to IHN
of Athens, 393-1 West Hancock Ave., Athens,
GA, 30601.
Grace's Birthday Party/ The G.R.A.C.E. Fund:
I put this one on the list in honor of Jim
Shearon and his airedale, Grace, both of whom
are looking down on us from heaven. David
Shearon and Mario Castro of Ashford Manor
will carry on the tradition of Grace's Birthday
Party, which raises funds for the G.R.A.C.E.
Fund. This fund pays for preventive care and
Christmas, purchase copies of the Beli-e-v-e
album, a compendium of songs from some of
Athens' best bands and remembrances from
Eve's teachers at Clarke Central High School.
They are available at all Jittery Joe's lotj»
tions (except the Eastside), Add Drug in Five
Points, Homeplace in Five Points, Wuxtry and
Schoolkids Records. For more information, go
to www.believealbum.com.
Proceeds from the sale of the album ben
efit the Athens-Clarke County Foundation
for Excellence. You may also send a dona
tion directly to: Foundation for Excellence,
Clarke County School District, Office of Public
Relations and Communications, 240 Mitchell
Bridge Rd., Athens, GA, 30606. So far, Eve's
friends, most of whom are in college, have
raised over $50,000 for the foundation.
Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia: The Girl
Scouts are one of the most egalitarian, inclu
sive organizations in the world for girls and
women. They teach girls the values of leader
ship, independent thinking, and resourceful
ness. People think that because of Girl Scout
cookie sales, the scouts
are sitting on a pile of
money. This is definitely
not the case. All pro
grams have to be within
financial reach of all of
the girls, which means
the council underwrites
most of the programs.
Those programs include
everything from hands-
on science programs at
Fort Discovery to mak
ing swaps for Thinking
Day, the day when girls
think about their sister
scouts around the world.
The theme for Thinking
Day this year is: "We
can stop the spread of
AIDS, malaria and other
diseases."
I am on the Fund
Development Committee
for our local Girl Scout
council, so I know
that their monetary
resources are used wisely.
Donations may be made
directly to Girl Scouts
of Historic Georgia,
185 Newton Bridge Rd.,
Athens, GA, 30607.
Community Connection:
This list would not be
near complete without
Community Connection of
Northeast Georgia, which celebrated its 25th
anniversary this year and serves as a crucial
"umbrella" and support organization of sorts
for many local non-profits. Visit www.com-
munityconnection211.org/donate or call 706-
353-1313 to help Community Connection.
Hands on Northeast Georgia: Needless to say,
some people are in a position whereby volun
teering their time, father than making mon
etary contributions, is the best way that they
can offer help. These days, the website www.
handsonnortheastgeorgia.org makes it easy to
find volunteer projects all across the commu
nity that suit your schedule and abilities.
So, these are a few of my ideas for
Christmas giving. Donations to non-profits
don't have to be big to ma!;e a big difference.
Mine are usually $25. Try making just one
donation this year, and see how it makes you
feel. I can't think of a better way to celebrate
the joy that is Christmas.

pital for animals whose owners cannot pay. To
make a donation to the fund, make yourcheck
payable to the UGA Foundation/ G.R.A.C.E.
Fund and mail it to Development Office,
College of Veterinary Medicine, University
of Georgia, Athens, GA, 30602-7371. They
will be happy to make an acknowledgment
of your gift in honor of someone in time for
Christmas.
DGW: Purchase a DVD of the local movie
Darius Goes West. I hope everyone knows
about Darius and his trip, but what a great
gift for someone who has everything, and
$17 of every DVD sale ($20 plus shipping) go
toward muscular dystrophy research. Visit the
website www.dariusgoeswest.org.
Eve Carson Scholarship Fund: I am still grap
pling with the reality of Eve's death. Because
my daughters went to school with her, I
knew Eve to be one of the brightest lights
of her generation. She was a kind and good
person who deserves to be remembered. For
