MUSIC NEWS AND GOSSIP
Yes, we keep ramping it up around here trying to squeeze
the last bit of news out of the Athens music scene of 2008. Is
the juice worth the squeezin'? You tell me. Examine the evi
dence below...
Digital So Real: For the first time in over 15 years fans of
Dreams So Real can get their hands on the band's two
albums recorded for Arista Records, Rough Night in Jericho
and Gloryline. Well, they can at least get their mouse on
them. After getting in f ouch with the right people at Sony/
BM6, which controls the remaining assets of Arista, those
two albums are now available via digital distribution houses
iTunes, Amazon.com, Rhapsody and oth
ers. If you've got a favorite place where
you shop online for this type of stuff,
look for it there—chances are good
they have it. The band credits former
Dreams So Real guitarist Peter Stroud,
now guitarist and musical director for
Sheryl Crow, with setting the wheels in
motion. These records have both been
out of print and bootlegged for years, so
if you've ever felt some guilt for paying
money to a pirate, it wouldn't be bad to
pony up some cash now.
> Flyer Than You, Flyer Than Me:
Congratulations and good luck wishes go
out to Heather McIntosh (Instruments,
a million other Elephant 6-related proj
ects) who has joined the live band for
New Orleans-based rapper Lil' Wayne.
She'll be playing bass for Wayne whom
she met while performing with Gnarls
Barkley. If you don't have any plans for
New Year's Eve and want to be in the Lil’ Wayne
middle of Atlanta, you can catch her
with Lil' Wayne, T-Pain, Xeyshia Cole, Keri Hilson and, inex
plicably, Gym Class Heroes at Atlanta's Philips Arena.
Now Booking Everywhere: Tasty World has undergone another
change as far as who is in charge of booking the joint. Local
entrepreneur, musician, promoter
and all-around happenin' dude
Mercer West will now handle
booking duties for the club. This
is actually a great pairing because
Tasty World is known for giving
pretty much any band its first
break in getting a live booking
and, well, so is West. Get in touch
with West via tastyworldbooking
@gmail.com.
>• Reunion Time Again: Former
local band Ashtray will reunite
for two shows that ardent fans
will find easy to catch. The
first is Wednesday, Dec. 17 at
Caledonia Lounge, and the
second is Tuesday, Dec. 23 at
Gainesville, GA venue the Monkey
Barrel. Ashtray was/is made up
of Wilmot Greene (The Georgia
Theatre), Ken Manring (Mandy
Jane & the Jaws of Life and owner
of local eatery White Tiger) and
Wilder Embry (Diggity, Brighter Ashtray
Shade). Local dentist Michael
Clarkson will sit in on a few tunes with the band. Also on the
bill for the Flicker show is DJ Immuzikation. Ashtray will play
two sets with the DJ in the middle. Check out what you're get
ting into over at www.myspace.com/ashtraykenwilwilder.
Low Stakes Sweepstakes: People in Athens probably haven't
heard the rumbling about a supposed reaction compilation to
the yet-to-be-fully-released We Fun feature-length film that
focuses on the Atlanta music scene. True, there's been seme
grumbling by bands that weren't included, but it's also just
Those are some pretty big shoes to fill. Order up and get more
information over at www.thorsrubberhammer.com.
As always, be sure to keep your news coming in, and always

damn good timing that the folks behind the upcoming We No
Fun compilation have gathered together a killer bunch of bands
for this 500-copy, vinyl only release. Athens band Chrissakes
and the now-defunct S.I.D.S. will appear beside tracks by
Brass Castle, Judi Chicago, Retconned and the also-defunct
Electrosleep International among others. Funny, because
Deerhunter bassist Josh Fauver was a member of Electrosleep
Int'l and supposedly Deerhunter is one of the bands people are
all sour-graped up about. Although it's admitted that it's "sort
of' a reaction to what some folks felt was a lopsided look at
the Atlanta music scene, it seems also true that it's just a killer
bunch of bands doing a record. Here's hoping this is the case.
There will be a three-day release party
at Atlanta's Drunken Unicorn January
29, 30 and 31, so wear your drinking
hat. For more details, please see www.
myspace.com/wenofuncomp.
Edited for Time: The Downtown Athens
Recording Company has been over
whelmed since announcing its AthFest
special of six hours for $100. To clarify,
this offer is good for only one six-hour
session. If you need more time, it'll run
you $25 an hour after the initial six.
That's still a major discount, and I know
they're booking fast, so give them a call
at 706-552-0745.
Get Hammered: The now DC-based
Thor's Rubber Hammer Productions
label continues to pump out tons of
Athens-related stuff. Case in point is the
inclusion of tracks by Instruments and
Chartreuse on its Christmas compilation
titled Last Winter We Didn't Sing. Limited
to an edition of 300, it's available this
week via the label's website. Also out this week is a live EP by
Gay Africa titled Pizzaze! Recorded live by Sloan Simpson, the
EP showcases Jim McHugh, Dylan Angell, Jason Robira and
Emily Armond doing approximately 20 minutes of what the
label describes as "Richard Thompson-style raga-rock." Hrnmm.
