OUR MUSIC EDITOR'S WEEKLY PICKS
Need ways to save money this holiday
season? I saw a great commercial that has
helped me limit my credit card expenditures.
Apparently, every time I use my Citibank Visa,
I am automatically entered for a chance to
tour with Nickelback. Yikes! Thanks for the
head's up, Citibank. That's a scary proposition,
and while I am sure the VIP concert tickets
and tour bus access wouldn't be forced on
me if I won, it's important to take a moment
to appreciate the serious repercussions of
spending more money than you actually have,
especially during these tough economic times.
I had no idea the consequences could be so
grave... nor so Canadian*. Now every time I
slide that credit card through the slot I hear
the generic growl of "How You Remind Me"
and I am reminded to keep my finances in
check. I'll be using only cold, hard cash for
these shows.
Grape Soda: Introducing the Brothers Lewis!
You've seen Mat and Ryan most recently rock
ing together in The Buddy System, but the
dynamic duo has just started up a new project.
Wednesday night will be tne band's second
(bass, drums), Eric Harris (drums), Heather
McIntosh (cello, bass) and John Fernandes
(violin, clarinet). Also on the bill is Sweet
Teeth Magic Pizza Dealers which will feature
Jim McHugh and Lord only knows who else.
Since Long Legged Woman took up and left for
California, Sweet Teeth has featured a random,
rotating cast of Dark Meat members as eclectic
as Sweet Teeth's many name variations (see:
Sweet Teeth Super Blooze Band; Sweet Teeth
Everlasting Blues Band, et al.). Whoever shows
up to play, expect them to bring lots of ambi
ence, noise and drone. You know, festive, win
tertime drone. (Farm 255, Thursday 18)
Pet Volcano's Christmas Party: To get a feel
for Pet Volcano's brand of rootsy Americana
rock, you might want to tune into the solo
works of members Spencer Frye and Jason
Beckham for a decent preview. You'll find
strong Southern storytelling from both art
ists, heavy with mood and yet ringing with
a sweet sort of honest simplicity. The well
established supporting musicians include the
steady rhythm of Eddie Glikin on drums, the
slapping percussion of bassist Tommy Jones

show, and the reviews from their debut were
rather favorable. Ryan is behind the drums on
this one (as opposed to guitar which he plays
in Buddy System) and Mat takes over vocals
and organ (instead of his Buddy System role
behind the drums). The vocals sound like they
are called in from the depths of space through
light years of psychedelic reverb, and the com
bination almost feels like a buzzing jazz freak-
out. Of course, the band is still in its infancy,
but it'll be exciting to see where Grape Soda
is headed. Also, make sure to stick around
and welcome Twin Tigers back from tour,
and enjoy the remarkable vocals of Cara Beth
Satalano as she fronts Witches. Oh, yeah, it's
FREE! (Go Bar, Wednesday 17)
Pipes You See, Pipes You Don't: In case
you missed Music Tapes' caroling tour, here's
another option for getting into the holiday
spirit Elephant 6-style. Psych-pop band Pipes
You See, Pipes You Don't is headed by Peter
Erchick of The Olivia Tremor Control and
Circulatory System, and tonight the band will
perform a special Christmas set. If you need
a refresher on the all-star lineup, the band
has counted in its ranks: Derek Almstead
and a tickling of the ivories care of Bart King.
Pet Volcano usually plays mostly originals,
but since this is a Christmas party, I imagine
the band will deck the set with holiday tunes.
(Little Kings Shuffle Club, Friday 19)
A Haml: Tonight is Flicker's holiday party,
and the event kicks off at 11 a.m. with an
arts and crafts festival. If you still don't have
a gift for that special someone, this might
be a nice opportunity to pick up something
hand-crafted and locally made. The craft fest
will wrap up around 5 p.m., and then the
tunes begin at 6 p.m. sharp. The tunes, by the
way, are also hand-crafted and will be locally
made by Haml, Liz Durrett, Jacob Morris
(Haml cellist) and Patrick Carey. You can
still download Haml's delightful new record
The Underground Stream free from www.haml.
org, and the gorgeous Durrett record Outside
Our Gates would make an ideal stocking buffer
for fans of Cat Power and the like. (Flicker
Theatre, Saturday 20)
