Caledonia Lounge
Atlanta's rising stars,
Howlies, know the secret
to success: “For any
unsigned artists out
there," says drummer and
vocalist Aaron Wood, "our
recommendation would
be underwear and tinsel
wigs." Apparently that's all
Wood was wearing onstage
the night his band was
discovered in a small dub
, in Ybor City, FL about a
year ago. It was only Howlies' 10th show, but by the end of the night every one of the
. 30 or so in attendance lined up for a CD or shirt. One of the new fans was so impressed
he sent Howlies' demo, a rougn home recording, to his cousin in New York who was hop
ing to launch a record labeL The rest is history as they say, as the careers of OverUnder
Records and Howlies launched simultaneously. "It was quite flattering because they had
wanted to start a label for awhile but didn't really see a band that made sense as their
first act to sign, until they s&w us."
The demo also impressed Legendaiy producer Kim Fowley (Runaways, Joan Jett) who
eagerly took on the debut record, Trippin' with Howlies, due out Feb. 3. Says Wood,
"[Fowler] actually considered flying out to Atlanta and sleeping on our living room
floor for a week in order to produce the record, which is crazy because he is a 69-year-
otd guy!" Instead, the "crazy genius" recorded the band in his California studio, rarely
allowing more than three takes per song as the band plowed through its garage-rock
mania live on 2-inch tape over just a few days. You can really feel the energy buzzing
on this record, but it's just a small glimpse of the controlled chaos that accompanies a
Howlies live show. Howlies encourage avid crowd participation, so expect to be handed a
tambourine and shake along all night to their perfect pop harmonies and raucous guitar
rock. [Michelle Gilzenrat]
