“An Evening of
Country Music”
40 Watt Club
He's known as the
crooner's crooner, the
Rolls Royce of country
singers. He's been called
Ol* Possum and the great
est country singer alive.
His wild days earned him
the nickname No-Show
Jones, and he's... Clay
Leverett? The guy from
the rock band Lona? The
guy who rocked the rock
and roll Christmas tunes
two weeks ago during
the holiday parade? Yup.
Leverett's got a long tra
dition of country music
worship—he had a band
called The Chasers that specialized in versions of classic country tunes—and tonight he's
filling the shoes and playing the songs of Mister George Jones himself, one of country's
pantheon of greats.
But Jones wasn't really complete until he teamed up with arguably the top name
among female country artists, Tammy Wynette. The duo created some of the sweetest
male-female vocal back-and-forths, though the pairings of Conway Twitty and Loretta
Lynn and Dottie West and Kenny Rogers provided tough competition! So, naturally,
Athens' finest country singer Kimberly Morgan, a petite blonde herself and with pipes
aplenty, takes up Wynette's role, muscling up to her signature rendition of the song
"Stand By Your Man"—a tune that's damn near unbeatable.
Jones and Wynette had a six-year marriage in the early 70s, and their collaborations
continued even after their D-I-V-O-R-C-E, dueting on tracks like "Golden Ring" and "Near
You." Wynette died in April of '98, and Jones still lives up in Nashville—two weeks ago
he was awarded a Kennedy Center Honor alongside Barbara Streisand and members of
The Who.
Leverett & Morgan, though, aren't the only act on the bill. It's an ampersand-friendly
night of country music indeed, with Kaitlin Jones & the County Fair performing twangy,
softer, classic-sounding tunes and Betsy Franck & the Bare Knuckle Band going for a
more ballsy, propulsive and bluesy country sound. The country-like-it-used-to-be party
gets going at 9 p.m. (Chris Hassiotis]
