Hello, Athens. Now that most of you have
recovered from our record-breaking snow
storm and are enjoying the early days of
spring, you'll likely be leaving the house more.
Wouldn't it be great to catch some bands this
week? I know they'd appreciate it. And, of
course, by extension, so would I. Whet your
appetite below...
New Crew: Several months back local musician
Ben Clack (Dark Meat) began booking Farm
255. A couple of months ago local promoter
Mercer West (Quiet Hooves, et al.) began
booking Tasty World. Now, the two have joined
together with Owen Gray and the three are
booking the Rye Bar. Chances are quite good
you already know one of these three guys but,
in any case, if you're
wondering whom to
contact concerning
the above, those are
your men. Inquire
further over at
www.myspace.com/
ryebarathens.
In Case You Missed
It: Venice Is Sinking
enjoyed quite a bit of
cyber action a couple
of weeks back when
its video for "Ryan's
Song" made its debut
at the popular online
music publication
Stereogum. The track
is from the band's
newly, and finally,
released album Azar
and was directed
by local filmmak
ers Jason Miller
and Ethan Payne
who operate Eikon
Productions. To
see what the fuss is
about, click over to
www.stereogum.com.
You're the Man Now,
Dog: Athens music
fans can quit gnash
ing their teeth
because word has
come through that
Smokedog is "back
with a vengeance." The duo, Jason Jones
and Thom Strickland, spent the last several
months goofing around with their own vari
ous solo projects but have recently compiled
a "best of' album of Smokedog tracks titled
Rogue Warriors. The release chronicles the
first 14 months of the band's existence dur
ing which time it released no fewer than 15
recordings that ranged from double albums
to full-length CDs and various EPs. The new
compilation arrives with a booklet featur
ing special track-by-track commentary and
explanation by Jones. Rogue Warriors is avail
able now for a mere $2.99 at Wuxtry Records
downtown. I swear to God I'm not making any
of this up. See for yourself via www.myspace.
com/smokedogifeelalrightifeelalright.
Brother, Can You Spare a Show?: Local band
Hope for Agoldensummer is currently out on
tour but has had several shows fall through.
In the past this would have predicated full-on
tour disaster, but in our wired world maybe
someone out there can help. Specifically,
the band is desperate for dates in Austin, TX
around Mar. 19 through 21, and then Mar.
25-29 between Kansas and Indiana, Indiana
proper, Virginia, Tennessee and North Carolina.
If you can help, please drop a line to Claire
Campbell via agoldensummer@yahoo.com.
Parade to Feature One Less Vehicle: The previ
ously mentioned snow storm in Athens was a
lot of fun for some folks, but there was prop
erty damage nearly everywhere as trees, many
severely weakened by our ongoing drought,
fell throughout Athens-Clarke County. Local
band Pride Parade saw its new touring van,
which they had yet to utilize, crushed by a
giant tree felled by the storm. In the inter
est of humanity, and
because the album
just plain rocks
and this situation
just plain sucks,
you might consider
purchasing a copy
of the band's newly
released album Dose,
which was recorded
and mixed by Kyle
Spence (Harvey Milk)
at Ronnie Jones
Sound. So far the
record is only avail
able on CD, but vinyl
hounds and digital
goobers will be sat
isfied in the near
future. Send sympa
thy to www.myspace.
com/prideparade69.
This Trucker Is a
Jock: Patterson Hood
will celebrate his
birthday this year by
playing DJ along with
DJ Other Voices,
Other Rooms at the
40 Watt on Monday,
Mar. 23. Hood says
he'll spin some favor
ites but also goof
off a little. Also on
the bill that night is
Garbage Island, and
Hood will sit in with
them. Happy 45th,
Patterson! In other news, Drive-By Truckers
will play the first of several dates with Booker
T. Jones Apr. 1 at Atlanta's Variety playhouse.
The band will back Jones' opening set and
then close the show. Jones' new album, Potato
Hole, on which the Truckers are his backing
band, is set for release Apr. 21.
Triple Header: Indie fans can enjoy a small
spectrum of acoustic pop on Thursday, Mar.
26 at Flicker Theatre & Bar. That night for
mer Athens resident Drew Danburry will play
his wistful pop, Christopher Without His
Liver (i.e., Christopher Ingham) will play his
nearly patented folk-punk and Black Balloon
(i.e., Christopher Ingram) will bless Athens
with his beautiful and delicate songwriting.
Explore all of these dudes via www.myspace.
com/drewdanburry, www.myspace.com/
blackballoontheband and www.myspace.com/

ATHENS IN AUSTIN
Hey, where did all the local musicians
go? Did they run for the hills as soon
as students returned from spring break?
Nah, they're just off in Texas for SXSW.
Flagpole will be there, too, blogging
live from Austin and, hopefully, post
ing video and music from the week-
long extravaganza. Congratulations
are in order for the seven lucky Athens
bands that were officially accepted
into SXSW this year: A. Armada,
Dead Confederate, Jurifer, Kuroma,
Maserati, Modem Skirts and Venice Is
Sinking. You can find a full list of all
their showcases at www.sxsw.com. Of
course, there are many more Athenians
headed west to play the equally exciting
unofficial day parties and events. At the
top of the list is the 40 Watt party at
Side Bar on Saturday, Mar. 21, which will
feature many of the aforementioned art
ists plus The Winter Sounds, Dancer vs.
Politician, Pride Parade, The Dumps,
Gift Horse, Quiet Hooves, Holy Liars
and a couple of out-of-towners. Make
us proud, guys! Tune into Homedrone
at www.flagpole.com to find out what
happens when tens of thousands of
musicians and music industry pros get
smothered in BBQ and free booze. See
you in Austin! [Michelle Gilzenrat]
