Between late December and early January
is the time when many theatres take a break
and gear up for.the new year, but there is still
lots of live theatre to see in our area!

at the Athens Community Theatre through Dec. 12.

Rocky Horror Show, by Richard O'Brien, Dec.
3-5 & 9-12, with special midnight shows on
Saturday, Dec. 4 and Friday, Dec. 10. This year
marks the 35th anniversary of the original
film's release, and director Steven Carroll grew
up with the film, "knowing the songs before
I really had any idea what some of them ^
meant." Carroll is not trying to replicate the
movie, however. "What I've personally enjoyed
is bringing the stage play to new life, at times
in spite of the movie that has helped make
it such a household name... I've felt myself
being challenged and invigorated by my cast,
my crew and my own attempts to bring the
play to life—not just reenact what's been
seen on the screen." The proceeds of the two
special midnight performances will be used for
new seats in the theatre, so go help T&G while

tions for Dandng at Lughnasa, by Brian Friel,
Dec. E & 7. Directed by Leara Rhodes, this
lovely play depicts five unmarried sisters in a

One-Act Championship with
their production of Anatomy
of Gray. Chase Brantley won
"Best Actor," Anne Lanier Gilbert won
"Best Actress," Ansley McAlister won "Best
Supporting Actress," and Robert Leverett was
named in the "All-Star Cast." North Oconee
High School was "First Runner-Up Overall" in
State 8-AA competition with their production
of The Putnam County 25th Annual Spelling
Bee. Dayne Joyner won "Best Supporting
Actor," Collier Cobb won "Best Supporting
Actress," and Will Coile was named to the
"All-Star Cast." Improv Athens, a UGA student
improvisation troupe, won first place at the
Southeastern Regionals of the College Improv
Tournament run through the Chicago Improv
Festival. Competing against nine other uni- -
versifies from around the Southeast including
GA Tech, Emory and Florida, they are now one
of the top-10 best college improvisational
troupes in the country and will compete at the
national competition this February in Chicago.
Co-Leader Katie Causey said, "Its very excit
ing for us, especially because our troupe is
so young. Our troupe was founded in 2006 by
a grad student at the time, Amy Roeder, who
has since graduated and is working with The
Second City (in Chicago) and is currently per
forming in their show at the Alliance Theatre
in Atlanta. We just became a student organi
zation this last year."

The UGA Dept, of Theatre and Film Studies
has several student-run performances going
on in December, including Improv Athens,
Dec. 1; Thalian Blackfriars' Some Girl(s) by
Neil La Bute, Dec. 3; Twelfth Night. Dec. 4 &
5; and Justice Agents' Who's Got the Money?,
Dec. 6 at the Athens-Clarke Public Library.
Next Act, a new musical theatre student group
at UGA, presents The Magic of Broadway.
a musical revue that showcases some of the
biggest Broadway songs of all time on Dec. 7.

Black Theatrical Ensemble presents Sweet
Mama Stringbean, a musical based on the
life of entertainer Ethel Waters, Dec. 3-5 at

SHARKwiNG comedy troupe performs at The
Globe on Dec. 9. Doors open at 9:30, so get
there early to grab a good seat!... Clarke
Central High School is offering a one-act
version of A Christmas Carol. Dec 2 & 4,
as Dessert Theatre. Admission for the show

14. NST is a showcase of short original works,
with the following rules: 1. Each act must be
original. 2. Don't break the law. 3. Don't break
the stage. Sounds like lots of fun! On Dec.
11, RoA will also perform three short plays
by Shannon Rood, depicting local histori
cal characters as part of the Convention and
Visitors Bureau/Athens Historic House Museum
Association's third annual Christmas Spirits
Holiday Tour, Dec. 11. Performances will be
at the T.R.R. Cobb House, Taylor-Grady House,
Ware/Lyndon House and Waddell/Church/
