MUSIC I THURSDAY, DEC. 5
Justin Townes Earle,
Jonathan Byrd & The Pickup
Cowbuys, Eliui Bronson
Melting Point ??? 7 p.m. ??? $17 (adv.), $20 (door)
Time was when Justin Townes EarLe
found it hard to shake the associations
with his father, Steve Earle, and stand out
as a singular songwriter in his own right.
From his period of drug addiction to travel
ing the world often by himself, his guitar
in tow, the younger Earle has seemed to
replicate the mythos of his father for most
of his adult life. But the Bloodshot Records
artist's latest release, 2012's Nothing's
Gonna Change the Way You Feet About Me
Now, garnered stellar reviews pretty much
across the board and established him as a
legitimate force in Americana. Earle's live
show is a stripped-down man-and-guitar-
and-sometimes-harmonica type of perfor
mance, so if you're looking to be serenaded
with some solid songs, this concert???the
last of Poverty is Real's 2013 Whatever it
Takes benefits???is definitely for you. [Dan

THEATER I FRIDAY, DEC. 6-SUN-
DAY, DEC. 8 & THURSDAY, DEC.
12-SUNDAY, DEC. 15
Rum ant Juliet
Athens Community Theater - 8 p.m. (Thursday???
Saturday), 2 p.m.
(Sunday) ??? $8???$15
Everyone is
familiar with
Shakespeare's Romeo
and Juliet, likely
due to the numer
ous retellings and
adaptations like Baz
Luhrmann's Romeo
+ Juliet, Arthur
Laurents' West Side
Story, Cold War par
ody Romanoff and
Juliet, computer-
animated Gnomeo
and Juliet and High
School Musical. But you've never seen a
Romeo and Juliet guite like the one Town &
Gown Players are bringing you. This Romeo
and Juliet is a mix between Shakespeare's
Elizabethan classic, the documentary Paris
is Burning and "RuPaul's Drag Race." Set
in the '90s, the Montagues and Capulets
aren't dueling family houses; they're duel
ing drag houses. UGA theatre major Jase
Wingate plays Romeo, and Caroline Bradley
Davis, a new Athens resident, plays Juliet.
The Town & Gown Players promise to give
audiences a fierce and fabulous tragedy.

MUSIC I FRIDAY, DEC. 6
The Wooten Brothers,
Lorry Mitchell Bond
Georgia Theatre ??? 8 p.m. - $17
Mention the name "Wooten" around
anyone with an affinity for funk music and
prepare for a long discourse regarding the
family of musical virtuosos. While broth
ers Victor and Roy (a.k.a. Futureman) are
probably the best known of the Wooten
clan???thanks to their longtime involve
ment with banjo wizard Bela Fleck and his
band the Flecktones???the two are joined
in the family band by their brothers Joseph
(on keyboards) and Regi (on guitar).
Collectively, the foursome has recorded and
performed with acts as diverse as Whitney
Houston, Kenny G, Curtis Mayfield, War and
the Steve Miller Band. With resumes that
extensive, it's no wonder these guys have
racked up countless Grammys and other
awards along the way. The busy brothers
rarely all share a stage together, so their
stop in Athens is a must-see for anyone
interested in seeing this funky family. [Dan

THEATER I FRIDAY, DEC. 6
50 States! The Musical
The Classic Center ??? 8 p.m. ??? $28???$35
In no way endorsed or even authorized
by author E.L. James, 50 Shades! The
Musical is a parody of Fifty Shades of Grey,
the erotic romance novel known for its
explicit scenes involving BDSM. The musi
cal opens with a book club of middle-aged
housewives deciding to read the unlikely
bestseller. Through the ladies' discussions
and slapstick show tunes like "I Don't Make
Love," "There's a Hole Inside of Me" and
"Butthole in Control," viewers won't be
spared the dirty details of the relationship
between naive college student Ana Steele
and manipulative businessman Christian
Grey. The produc
tion steers clear
of nudity, but the
content is intended
for adult eyes and
ears only. The Fifty
Shades trilogy grew
from a Twilight
fan fiction into
the fastest-selling
paperback of all
time with over 70
million copies sold
worldwide, and with
a film adaptation on
the way, it's about
time someone poked
a little fun at it. [Jessica Smith]
MUSIC I SATURDAY, DEC. 7
Bising Appalachia, Bahasya,
Carl Liodberg & Friends
New Earth Athens - 8 p.m. ??? $10
Atlanta-born sisters Leah and Chloe
Smith began Rising Appalachia as an
outlet for their myriad artistic impulses,
incorporating influences from all corners
of American roots music to create a tec
tonic musical whole. The hard-touring,
politically minded group's sound draws
from soul, folk, jazz, spoken word, hip hop
and beyond???a decidedly strange brew
that nonetheless goes down smoothly.
And the New Orleans-based outfit doesn't
stop with just music: its RISE Collective, a
nebulous group of performers, educators,
dancers and many other cultural movers
and shakers, aims to connect artists from
all disciplines to one another and to their
communities in new and often interesting
ways. [Gabe Vodicka]
