Color & Comp
Gallery@Hotel Indigo - 6:30-8:30 p.m. - FREE!
“Color & Comp’’ returns to the basics
with pieces that explore form, hue, shade
and pigment. Jason Matherly creates
color block paintings on irregularly
shaped custom canvases, and Jamie
Keiter assembles wall-bound ceramic
sculptures using glazed porcelain stone
ware tiles. James Wilson offers paper
collages heavy with geometric shapes,
while Mike Landers creates extraordinary
color gradients through layers of Legos.
InKyoung Chun utilizes plexiglass as a
building material for her small domestic
scenes, while Shawn Campbell draws
attention to his chosen subjects, football
players, by placing them on fields of solid
gold. “Color & Comp” will remain on view
through Feb. 2. [Jessica Smith]

The Growlers
Georgia Theatre - 7:30 p.m. - $25
The progenitors of the quasi-fictional
“beach goth" genre that also spawned a
popular California music festival of the
same name, garage-rock pranksters The
Growlers bring their rollicking live show
to Athens this week. Featuring a grooving
blend of surf, punk and, yes, goth, this
year’s Casual Acquaintances full-length
is a collection of outtakes, demos and
abandoned song fragments culled from
sessions for 2016’s City Club. The latter
record, produced by The Strokes’ Julian
Casablancas, showcased a synthier side
of the SoCal collective. New York City
punk act Surfbort—a fellow Casablancas
associate signed to his Cult Records
imprint—opens Thursday’s concert.

Max Richter
Hodgson Hall • 7 p.m. - $25-65
A rare crossover figure in the world of
modern classical music, German-born,
British-based Max Richter explores the
spaces between orchestral performance,
minimalist composition, ambient drone
and electro-acoustic experimentation.
Best known in the popular sphere for
his contributions to dozens of TV and
movie soundtracks—his atmospheric
work has appeared in projects from “The
Leftovers” to Arrival—Richter has also
released eight rich and variegated studio
albums, including the sprawling concept
effort Sleep/From Sleep. Joined in Athens
by the American Contemporary Music
Ensemble, he’ll perform his searching
2010 album Infra, plus selections from
