EVENT | FRI, OCT 25
Kindfest
Tate Student Center • 12-4 p.m. • FREE!
UGA student organization Karma
Coffee is once again hosting its Kindfest
Friday afternoon on the lawn at the Tate
Student Center. Honestly one of the most
genuinely nice events around, its purpose
is to inspire acts of kindness on campus
and provide opportunities for on-the-spot
acts of such. These activities include
making reusable bags, writing thank you
notes, participating in a group art project
and more. A multitude of student organi
zations are participating in this—way too
many to list here—but live music is to be
provided by Aspen Anonda, Lily Dabbs,
CannonandtheBoxes, Carley Kleban, Ian
Kinney and Jaren Mendel. For more infor
mation, see facebook.com/thekarmacof-
fee. [Gordon Lamb]
MUSIC | FRI, OCT 25
Unknown Hinson
The Foundry - 7:45 p.m. • $15-20
Created by musician Stuart Baker in
the early 1990s for an obscure North
Carolina public access show, Unknown
Hinson has become one of the premier
cult-rock figures in the Southeast, a
drunken rockabilly vampire with a pen
chant for vaguely problematic songwriting.
Steeped in redneck culture but armed
with a sly sensibility, tunes like “Peace,
Love and Hard Liquor" and “I Ain’t
Afraid of Your Husband" meld Hinson’s
love of classic country and shit-kicking
psychobilly. Baker, who also voices the
main character on “Squidbillies,” plays
his now-annual Halloween show Friday
with support from local punks Shehehe
and Atlanta country duo Andrea and Mud.

Artists in Residence:
Lawrence Stueck
RSVP for Location • 3-5 p.m. • $15-20
WUGA’s Artists in Residence is coming
to a close after a five-year run with a visit
to the eclectic home of Lawrence Stueck.
An influential educator and multi-dimen
sional artist, Steuck taught art at Athens
Academy for 17 years, helped found the
Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation and has
designed over 60 sculptural playscapes
for children. His unusual home is in the
former Sunday School rooms of a historic
Watkinsville church built in 1909, where
visitors will be able to explore his collec
tion and see past and upcoming projects.
An interview with Stueck will be broad
cast on the station leading up to the open
house. [Jessica Smith]
ART | SUN, OCT 27
"Portals" Opening Reception
State Botanical Garden - 2-4 p.m. - FREE!
Beth Thompson’s Portals: At the
Intersection of Landscape and Self is a
newly published photography book and
deck of cards that offers opportunities for
introspection and contemplation in the
natural world. Inspired by the travels of
naturalist William Bartram, she took her
camera through parts of Georgia, Florida,
Alabama and the Carolinas, turning the
lens to all sorts of interesting plants,
animals and bodies of water. Presented
in her signature “Possible Perceptions”
style, the images are modified into kalei
doscopic patterns that mimic the fractal
geometry that occurs in nature. The
accompanying exhibition will remain on
view in the Visitor Center through Dec. 1.
