There are three thousand and sixy-four
^ languages in the world, and its inhabitants
profess more than one thousand religions.
The number of men is about equal to the
number of women. The average of life is
about thirty-three years. One quarter die
previous to the age of seventeen. To every
one thousand persons only one reaches one
hundred years of life; to every one hundred
only six reach the age of sixty-five, and not
more than one in flve hundred lives to eighty
years of age. There are on earth one billion
of inhabitants, of these thirty-three million
thirty-three thousand and thirty-three, die
every year, ninety-one thousand, eight
hundred and twenty-four every day, three
thousand seven hundred and thirty every
hour, and sixty every minute or one every
second. The married are longer lived than
the single, and above all those who observed
a sober and industrious conduct. Tull men
live longer than short ones. Women have
more chances of life in their favor previous
to fifty years of age than men have, but
fewer afterwards. The number of marriages
is in proportion of seventy-five to every one
thousand individuals. Marriages are more
frequent after equinoxes—that is during the
months of June and December. Those born
in the spring are generally of a more robust
constitution than others. Births are more
frequent by night than by day, also deaths.
The number of men bearing arms is ealeu-
ted at one-fourth of the population.
The more persons are out of doors, the
more healthy they are and the longer they
live. Every human being ought to have an
hour or two Of sunshine at noon in winter,
and in the early forenoon in summer.
Tubbs are four ways of getting along in
the world. A man must get a living
1— By inheritance;
2— By Labor;
3— By begging, or
4— rBy stealing.
After all, the most satisfactory way of ob
taining a living, is by labor.
Rely on your own judgmont as far os pos
sible. A man who bos no idea of his own,
but is perpetually running to others for ad
vice, has no self within him, and is a mere
clement of a human being, borne about the
world an insignificant cipher, unless he
chances to fasten, by accidental cohesion, to
somo other floating and supplementary ele
ment by which ho forms a species of corpo
ration resembling a man.
