THE SOUTHERN WORLD, APRIL 1,1884
l„et tlie Conference be Held.
Editor Southern World—The “Geor
gia State Agricultural Society ” at the re
cent convention, held in Savannah, de
termined to hold a fair at Macon middle
of October next. There is also on foot
a “World’s Cotton Exposition” to open
at New Orleans December 4th, and close
May, 1885. Now, I write to ask that
your valuable and extensively read jour
nal assist us to combine every effort to
be made, or that should be made ip Geor
gia, to make the State Fair a decided
success, and to assure the largest and
best State exhibition at New Orleans
We are now perfecting an arrangement
to have a conference soon between the
“ State Commissioner ” to New Orleans,
President” State Horticultural Society,
Master “ State Grange,” President “Jer-
sy Herd Association,” “Commissioner
of Agriculture” and President “Georgia
State Agricultural Society.” The object
of which is to enlist these associations
and officials in every possible way to
take an active co-operative interest in
these worthy Enterprises. By co-opera
tion on the part of these, with the cities,
railroads and citizens generally, we can
and will accomplish all that the most en
thusiastic could expect, at but little cost
to any one. Without this co-operation
and effort our State Fair will be a meager
one, and the exhibit at New Orleans
of little credit to the State.
The object of the State Agricultural
Society in holding a fair is to build up
our material interest—not that alone of
agriculture. If good comes of it, every
citizen of Georgia must be benefited.
We hope to stimulate and educate our
farmers to a more economic, progressive,
and diversified agriculture, extending
their observations, inquiries and invest
ments of capital to cattle raising, poultry,
fish, fruits and flowers, truck' farming,
technical education, and other matters
that must engage our attention and en
list our efforts, if we are to remain the
“ Empire State of the South.” Many of
our sister Southern States are pressing
us hard at this time for this well won
compliment. The chief end of the Cot
ton Exhibition to be held, will be to
stimulate the production and manufac
ture of cotton, enhance the value of the
raw material as well as the fabrics, en
courage the invention and manufacture
of machinery with which to cultivate,
gather and manufacture cotton. All
well enough, but Georgians must remem
ber that we cannot compete with our
Western neighbors along the Mississippi
in the production of cotton. Hence the
necessity of diverting at least a part of
our time, money, brains and muscle to
other pursuits. I hope to see Georgia in
two decades a grain growing State, grass
and cattle producing State, a cotton man
ufacturing State, a fruit and vegetable
producing State, tilled with skilled labor;
a growing State, and still the “ Empire
State.” All papers friendly to the ob
jects to be fostered, will please copy this
article. L. F. Livingston,
President Ga. St. Agl. Society.

STATEMENT OK MB. BSNJ. T. HEABNDON.
Early In November, 1881, while sewing on the
machine, my wife was taken with a severe pain
in her side, which was soon followed by hemor
rhages from her lungs and a severe cough. Fever
commenced, she could neither eat nor sleep,
and in a few weeks she was reduced to a living
skeleton. The attending physician told me that
he thought one of her lungs was entirely gone.
She could not retain the most delicate nourish
ment on her stomach. I then agreed with Dr.
8uUivan, my family physician, to call Dr. Hollo
way in consultation. They made a final exam
ination of the paUent and pronounced the case
hopeless. Dr. Holloway then suggested the
Brewer’s Lung Restorer as a last resort. I sent
for a bottle and gave her a dose. I found that
she could retain it on her stom ch and after
about the thin) dose, I began to notice some im
provement In her condition. I continued the
medicine regularly, and by the time she had
taken two bottles, she was able to walk about
the house She is now in better health than she
has enjoyed for several years. 1 believe the
Lung Restorer saved her life. We have six chil
dren, some of them grown.”

Dry Tetter.
For yean I was afflicted with Dry Tetter of
the most obstinate type. Was treated by many
of the best physicians; took quantities of mer
cury, potash and arsenic, which, instead of cur
ing the Tetter, crippled me up with mineral poi
son and rheumatism. The Tetter continued to
grow worse, and the itching almost made me
crasy. In this condition I was induced to take
Swift’s Specific, and the result was as astonish
ing as it was gratifying. In a few months the
Tetter was entirely well, the Mercurial Poison
lng all out of my system, and I was a'well man

The Cleve’ Cotton Planter, which is advertised
in this paper will, it is claimed drop cotton seed
at spaces distance from three to thirty-six inches
with certainty, depositing as much seed as may
be desired and as little. This method of plant
ing saves nine-tenths of the seed and reduces
the labor of thinning to a stand. Such an imple
ment will save millions of dollars yearly in cot
ton culture alone. Many progressive farmers
now favor giving cotton wide distance in the
rows. Mr. Cleves states that he will adopt his
machine for check-rowing whenever there is
sufficient demand for such an implement. And
in the meantime he furnishes one at a very mod
crate cost which will give satisfactory results
spacing in the row.
The Harnett House, as now conducted, is do

extremoly moderate rates, make it the most pop
