speaks of the general use of hot water
as one of the most remarkable of recent
public eccentricities, adding that it fair
ly promises to beat the patent medicinti
cure-alls out of the market. A promi
nent physician is quoted as saying: ** It
was originally claimed as a cure for the
dyspeptic merely, but now almost every -
and more care, because he feels that as
he is under treatment he should make
an effort to give the euro a fair show.
Very few things are better than hot wa
ter to stimulate the stomach before
breakfast after the exhaustion conse
quent upon the night's sleep. Cold wa
ter is a bad thing for the digestion, be-
body drinks hot water for almost every- caU se it chills the stomach, so hot wa
thing. It has become the rage, and
there is scarcely a prominent hotel in
the city which does not serve it to scores
of guests; and even the restaurants in
localities of trade where everybody is
supposed to be too busy during working
hours to pay attention to health have
scores of customers—bankers and
brokers and such—for whom the waiters
ter is excellent because it heats it up,
starts the fire to going, as it were.
These and other facts in its favor go far
towards explaining its popularity, but
like everything else it can be carried
into extremes.”
WATER FOR INFANTS.
With the exception of tuberculos's.. no

the lunch.” A t rominent hotel mana- te8tinal catarrh of infancy, occurring es-
ger says: “The waiters now think no P® cial, y during the hot summermonths,
more of filling orders for it than of fill- am * caused, in the great majority of
ing orders for water or milk. The peo- ca8es > by improper diet. There are
pie who use it are either invalids or peo- man y npon whom the idea does not
pie who think their digestion is not ex- seem to i ,ave impressed itself that an
infant can be thirsty without at the
same time being hungry. When milk,
the chief food of infants, is given in ex
cess, acid fermentation results, causing
vomiting, diarrluea, with passage of
green or greenish yellow stools, elevated
temperature, and the subsequent train
of symptoms which are too familiar to
need repetition. The same thing would
occur in an adult if drenched with milk.
The infant needs, not food, but drink.
The recommendations of some writers,
that barley water or gum water should
he given to the little patients in these
case*, is sufficient explanation of their
want of success in treating this affec
tion. Pure water is perfectly innocuous
to infants, and it is difficult to conceive
how the seeming prejudice against it
ever arose. Anyone who has ever no
ticed the avidity wi'li which a fretful
sick infant drinks water, ami marks the
early abatement of febrile and other
symptoms, will be convinced that water,
as a beverage, a quencher of thirst, as
a physiological necessity, in fact, should
not be denied to the helpless members
actly what it should be. It is wonderful
how this hot water system has taken
hold. I know of plenty of people in
our hotel who are convinced that there
is no case of dyspepsia which it will not
cure; and some people almost appear to
think that there is now no more use for
doctors.”
The object of the editor, physician
and hotel manager quoted is evidently
to cast a shade of ridicule on what they
call this “ hot water craze;” but if peo
ple are bound to have some hobby, let.
them by all means liave one so cheap
and comparatively innocent as hot water
in preference to the costly and often in
jurious active medicines, and patent
humbugs that they would otherwise
swallow for their diseases either real or
imaginary
Hot water is no more a panacea than
the advertised cure-alls with which
newspapers are filled; and it may be
unnecessarily, and even improperly
used, but it has a wide range of appli
cation', is good for other ailments besides

remedy, or any one system of treatment allce aml rapidly be( . ome betlei . when
for the cure of all diseases, but I
fully convinced that for a very large
number of the ailments alllicting man
kind there is no remedy or combination
of remedies so extensively applicable,
so cheap, so convenient, so safe and so
efficacious as water internally and exter
nally, either hot or cold, used judicious
ly according to the peculiarities of each
case. Of course discretion and judg
ment are necessary for the proper use
of water, as of any other remedy having
any curative power; and if no remedy
but water were used, doctors, men of
skill and science would still be needed.
But if every man must be “his own
doctor,” he will find a water bucket a
safer and better outfit than a medicine
chest.
Accordant with the views above ex
pressed by me, I give the following from
a “distinguished physician” quoted in
the article from the newspaper speaking
rather lightly of the “ hot water craze.”
The reporter called on this physician
and asked him whether be bad observed
the popularity of the hot water cure.
“ Why,” sai<l he, nodding to a patient
who had just called, “ hero is one who
drinks water three times a day, and it
docs her good too.” “ Is it in such gen
eral use as claimed?” “ I think so. It
appears to have taken the people by
storm, - and I cannot see any objection
treated to the much needed draught of
water. If any one prescription is valu
able enough to be used in routine prac
tice, it is “ Give the baby water.”
