Tbe Mule wltn tlie JScyjro a Little
Alieacl.
Just over the branch lives an old ne
gro, but still able to work his small
patch. I had frequently noticed him
and his mule. But now “ running-round-
cotton-time ” I happened to get a better
notion of the nigger and the mule.
Early in the morning I saw them on the
hill-side, and for three hou r s, as from
time to time I looked, there was mule,
plow and nigger as still as a tableaux.
The plow was as still as the mule, the
nigger as immovable r,8 either; the
nigger's attitude had an air of “ I can
stand it if you can,” with nevertheless
a something suggesting thoughtfulness.
Altogether, the . picture was one of
“stubborn serenity.” I got my field
glass better to view the scene. They
were stationary. about quarter way
across the field in the row; about half
an hour later, the nigger moved. First,
he straightened the line back, carefully
laying them in the row. (I wish I could
describe the solemnity of his move
ments.) There was no uncertainty—
he was sure of the success of his flank
movement. Not an utterance or noise of
any kind was apparent. My curiosity
wa^pow intense. He walked solemnly
to the foreshoulder of the mule, then
slowly turning walked back again with
his shoulder braced against the mule’s
Bide, thvm with shoulder braced against
the mules flank, with the utmost tender
ness he reached his off hand down and
took hold of the bushy tail, and com
menced a slow motion of grinding, an
imitation of an hand organ. The mule,
however seemed for a while as undis
turbed as be might have been had his
revolving tail been any other mule’s
tail. If there was anything noticeable,
it might been an atmosphere of mulish
satisfaction, that "something else had stir
red first."
Steadily and slowly that tail went
round and round with the regularity of
a machine.
I tried to determine which it would be
safe to bet on. For twenty minutes the
monotonous grinding went on and I was
tiring of my watch, when I thought I
felt a movement somewhere about the
mule’s head; it was his left ear laid
back and in a few moments the other
followed, both pointed at the perform
ance going on at the rear. So matters
remained for a minute or two when the
head began coming around, and when
it got into position for the eyes to take
in the situation, there came a voice—I
was too far to bear distinctly what he
gaid—“ What in the d—1 are ye doin’
tha’? I don’ wantenny mo’—g ; ve it up,”
and off he started down the row, and
he has never balked Bince.
The mule

Mr. J. R. Stewart, of Macon, Ga., a well known
and trustworthy gentleman, makes the follow
ingstatement: “ My son. who was between three
and four years old, was all drawn up with rheu
matism. His bones were twisted, and he was
doubled out of shape. He suffered Inteuse
pain, had lost his appetite, wa« cross and fret
f ul. He was reduced to a mere skeleton, and
had to be carried about on a pillow. As these
cases of rheumatism, where the bones were
twisted and the joints were all crooked, bad for
years ballled the skill of the most eminent phy
sician, I determined to use 8 Wilts’s Specific, at
I had seen testimonials from men whom I knew
to be trustworthy, of similar cases It had cured.
I used two large Iszo botttes of S. 8. 8. accord
ing to directions, with the most satisfactory re
sults. My son commenced improving with the
first dose oi the medicine. His sufferiug dimin
ished daily and his appetite increased; he be
came cheerful and in good spirits. Gradually
he regained use of his limbs, the twitted bonet
and joints stralghted out and in less than tw<
months he was entirely cured, and could walk
and get about as well as any child of his age.
