AASU Student Earns
Award from Georgia
Women’s Institute
Leona Avey
Armstrong Atlantic
State University student
Leona Avey is the recipient
of a $1,000 Leadership
Scholarship from the
Georgia Women’s Institute
(GWI). Avey was honored
during GWI’s annual
Georgia Woman of the Year
banquet in Atlanta on July
29.
Avey, office manager in
AASU’s Department of
Languages, Literature and
Philosophy, carries a 3.75
grade point average. She is
pursuing a double major in
law and society and gender
and women’s studies in
preparation for a legal career
in public policy affecting
women’s issues. She is a
member of the AASU Staff
Advisory Council, serving as
chair of its communications
committee.
“I am honored to
receive the scholarship for
my leadership and academic
work at Armstrong. My goal
is a career in law, specializ
ing in employment and fami
ly issues,” Avey said.
The GWI is a nonprofit
corporation incorporated on
Women’s Equality Day,
August 26, 2006. Its pur
pose is to bring women
together; to provide for non-
partisanship advocacy, lead
ership, and a voice for
women; to hold conferences,
seminars, and training in
support of women’s issues;
and to provide recognition of
women’s accomplishments
across the state of Georgia.

by a magnificent songstress
who has devoted herself to
preserving sacred African
American songs of worship.

Lewis Health Promotion
Center is hosting the 3rd
Annual Arts & Wellness
Expo on August 23rd from
10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. next
to the Starfish Cafe at the
corner of East Broad and
Gwinnett Streets. The Arts &
Wellness Expo is a free, pub
lic event featuring 24 artists
offering hands-on arts and
craft activities for all ages.
Artists will also showcase,
demonstrate and sell original
art in this indoor/outdoor
event. Performances featur
ing artists in music, dance
and spoken word are part of
this day of creativity and fun.

will have an opportunity to
design the Sustainable
Fellwood logo in a contest
that kicks off on September
2nd.
Prizes will be awarded
to winners and the first place
prize will be a new laptop
computer donated by
Seimitsu Business
Technology Solutions.
Second place is a new digital
camera (or gift of choice) with
a Circuit City $250 gift card,
and honorable mention is a
Circuit City gift card for $ 100.
Judges will be looking
for a logo which graphically
conveys and illustrates an
understood message and
vision of a sustainable com
munity.
Sustainable Fellwood
will be built with sustainable
materials with high standards
for energy and water efficien
cy . For example, pervious
paving will be used where
possible to allow water to nat
urally infiltrate the ground,
reducing the impact on the
neighborhood stormwater
system. Construction on
Phase I, the first 110 housing
units, is scheduled to begin in
early September.
Sustainable Fellwood is
registered in the U.S. Green
Building Councils LEED
(Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design) for
Neighborhood Development
pilot program and will be
guided by the Smart Growth
Network, s principles for
diverse, walk-able, distinctive,
attractive communities.
Sustainable Fellwood is also
registered in the EarthCraft
Coastal Communities through
Southface Energy Institute.
The Sustainable
Fellwood logo contest opens
September 2nd . The deadline
for entries is December 10,
2008, and all submissions
must be postmarked on that
date. All submissions must be
