S enator Barack Obama, was bom in
Hawaii on August 4, 1961, to Barack
Obama, Sr. and Ann Dunham. His par
ents met while attending the University of
Hawaii, where his father was enrolled as a
foreign student. His mother was from heart-
land-of-the-U.S. Kansas, and his father from
Kenya. Barack’s parents eventually divorced,
and after his mother remarried, he lived in In
donesia for a time before returning to Hawaii
to live with his grandparents. He later moved
to New York, where he graduated from Co
lumbia University in 1983.
Barack earned his law degree from Harvard
in 1991, where he became the first African-
American president of the Harvard Law Re
view. He was a civil rights lawyer and taught
constitutional law in Chicago. His advocacy
work led him to ran for the Illinois State Sen
ate, where he served for eight years begin
ning in 1996. While in the Illinois State Sen
ate, Barack served as chairman of the Public
Health and Welfare Committee. In 2004, well
into his U.S. Senate campaign, Barack wrote
and delivered the keynote address at the 2004
Democratic National Convention in Boston,
and became a rising star in U.S. politics. A
few months later, he was elected to the U.S.
Senate with a landslide 70% of the vote. Four
months into his senate career, Time magazine
named him “one of the world’s most influ
ential people,” calling him “one of the mosl
admired politicians in America.” Barack for
mally announced his candidacy for the 2008
presidential election in Springfield, Illinois
on February 10, 2007.
Barack is married to Michelle Robinson,
whom he met in 1988 while working at a lav-
firm. They were married in 1992 and have
two daughters: Malia and Sasha.

Ward Sears has
announced that she
will leave the Supreme
Court of Georgia on June
30, 2009, when her term as
Chief comes to an end.
She will not seek reelec
tion when her six-year
term as a justice ends Dec.
31, 2010. In stepping
down, she also will no
longer chair The Judicial
Council of Georgia, the
state agency charged with
administering and improv
ing Georgia's courts.
Sears, 53, has served
on the Court since 1992,
when then Gov. Zell
Miller appointed her as the
first woman and youngest
person ever to serve on the
state Supreme Court. She
became Chief Justice in
2005, becoming the first
African American female
Chief Justice in the United
States. Under her leader
ship, the Georgia Supreme
Court is today the most
productive high court in
the nation, according to a
recent study by The
University of Chicago
Law School. During her
16 years on the Court,
Chief Justice Sears has
developed a national repu
tation for her advocacy of
children and families, par
ticularly for speaking out

"square- off" in a fantastic
cooking event - “Savannah's
100 Celebrity Men Who
Cook.” All proceeds will ben
efit The United Negro College
Fund (UNCF). Your donation
will help send some deserving
students to the 39 member
historically Black colleges
and universities. Over 200
students from Savannah are
enrolled in UNCF schools.
