Eclectics' at Gallery S.P.A.C.E. showcas
es artist's diverse talent, inspiration
Cultural Arts Theatre's abridged
'Shakespeare' not short on laughs
Elaine George-Asaro's
exhibition, "Eclectics" will
showcase the diverse collec
tion of portraitures, land
scapes, African fiber pieces
and non-traditional quilts
crafted by this colorful
Savannah artist. The exhibi
tion will be on display at the
City of Savannah's Gallery
S.P.A.C.E. Jan. 9 through 23.
At the youthful age of
72, George-Asaro is still
learning, exploring and creat
ing. Her images have been
created from watercolors,
pastels and charcoal, oils and
acrylic paints, fabric, wood,
and stone. Her inspiration
flows from all over the
world, with references to
Egypt, Korea, Somalia,
Afghanistan and other far-
flung locales revealed in the
titles of her works.
“I feel that I have been
an artist all of my life. Eve
just grown in my knowledge
of it," George-Asaro
explains. "I try to capture
expressions from within. For
example, my 'bling rooms' —
omatedly detailed paintings
of elegant interiors — express
my desire for places that I'd
love to lavish in."
The Southern experi
ence for George-Asaro
included learning African
quilting techniques taught to
her by a woman named
Tahiri Pleasant. Her quilts
are celebrations of riotous
color, rich patterning and
embellishment. She attrib
utes finding her artistic niche
to Pleasant and the inspira
tion she has imparted. "You
will get to know my soul
when you see my African-
styled wall hangings and
quilts, both non-traditional
and hand-stitched."
Originally from New
York City's Harlem neigh
borhood, George-Asaro
retired to Savannah in 1998.
She studied art at the
Savannah College of Art and
Design. She is a member of
the Savannah Art Association
and has exhibited her works
locally at Savannah State
University's African-
American History
Celebration, The Angel Cafe
and Arts on the River.
An artist's reception
will be held Jan. 9 from 6 to
8 p.m. The exhibition and
reception are free and open
to the public. Gallery

Savannah's Cultural Arts Theatre offers an antidote for
the post-holiday blues with their comedic spoof, "The
Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged),"
coming to the Black Box at S.P.A.C.E. in January. [L-R:
Darwin Hull, Ryan McCurdy, and Phil Keening].
The City of Savannah's
Cultural Arts Theatre will
stage its winter production,
The Complete Works of
William Shakespeare,
(Abridged), Jan. 16, 17, 18,
23, 24 and 25 in the Black
Box at S.P.A.C.E., located at
9 W. Henry St.
Originally written by
William Shakespeare and
adapted by Adam Long,
Daniel Singer and Jess
Borgeson of the Reduced
Shakespeare Company, this
irreverent, fast-paced romp
takes the audience on a
roller coaster ride through
the Bard's 37 plays in 97
minutes. Initially staged in
1987, the play was London's
longest-running comedy (at
nine years). It was praised
by the Los Angeles Times as
"wildly funny," and lauded
by the Montreal Gazette as
"the funniest show you are
likely to see in your life
time."
Directed by Elbe Pyle,
the City's new Performing
Arts Coordinator, the show
features Phil Keeling,
Darwin Hull and Ryan
McCurdy as — most hilari
ously — themselves. The
three characters change
pitch, costume, personality
and even gender at dizzying
speeds, as they weave
together snippets of
Shakespeare's works into a
riotously cohesive produc
tion.
Look for side-splitting
parodies of Romeo and
Juliet, Titus Andronicus,
Othello, Antony and
Cleopatra, Julius Ceasar and
more. The production also
includes a self-proclaimed
"world-record" reduction of
Hamlet, served up in just 43
seconds.
"This play makes the
bold statement that
Shakespeare was both the
greatest playwright of the
English language and --
occasionally — a total hack,"
Pyle commented.
"Fortunately, this allows us
to find the hilarity in the
masterpieces and the really
bad plays alike, whether
you've read everything
Shakespeare ever wrote or
think Hamlet is just 'a Mel
Gibson movie'."
S.P.A.C.E. is located at
9 West Henry St.
Performances will take
place Jan. 16, 17, 23 and 24
at 8 p.m. and Jan. 18 and 25

iors and students. This pro
duction contains mature
themes and humor.
