Superintendent's Student of the
Month - Lauren Rose Cummings
The Superintendent’s
Student of the Month is
Lauren Rose Cummings, a
senior at Woodville
Tompkins Technical &
Career Institute (home
school: Jenkins High).
Lauren was selected for her
leadership qualities and aca
demic achievement.
Lauren has exhibited out
standing achievement in and
out of the classroom. While
maintaining a full honors
course load and participating
in a number of organizations
and school activities, Lauren
maintains a 3.8 GPA and
consistently goes above and
beyond her teachers’ expec
tations. Lauren is the Chief
Editor of the
Yearbook/Newspaper, a
member of the National
Technical Honor Society,
Future Business Leaders of
America, Marching Band,
Track & Field team and she’s
also a Governor’s Honors
Lauren Rose Cummings
Program nominee.
Lauren is very active in
her community, as a member
of the Chatham County
Youth Commission, Sankofa
Dance Theatre Junior
Company, and was named
Miss Savannah Teen USA in
2008.
After graduation,
Lauren hopes to pursue a
career as a Registered Nurse
or Massage Therapist. So far,
she has received acceptance
letters to Mercer University
and Valdosta State
University. When asked
what motivates her to be her
best, Lauren says, “Success
favors the prepared mind.”

and model citizen for her

the Month.
The Superintendent’s
Student of the Month pro
gram recognizes individual
students at the monthly
board meetings who have
excelled in the area of aca
demics, leadership, and com
munity service. Lauren was
recognized by Dr. Lockamy
and presented with an award
plaque and $100 savings
bond at the regular board
meeting on Wednesday,
January 7.

student research into African-
American history through
books, newspaper articles,
oral histories taken by the stu
dents themselves, and other
primary source materials. No
essay should include more
than two online sources.
A panel of judges made
up of local academic and
media representatives will
read and score all essay sub
missions. Selected finalists
will then be invited to deliver
their essays before a separate
panel of judges and a live
audience at GHS's Hodgson
Hall on February 9, 2009.
For the fourth year in a row,
WSAV's Kim Gusby will
serve as the master of cere
monies for the event. Prizes
will be awarded to first, sec
ond, and third place winners
in both the middle and high
school categories. A recep
tion will follow.
Essays must be received
at the Georgia Historical
Society, 501 Whitaker Street,
Savannah, Georgia, 31401,
by 5:00 p.m. on Thursday,
January 22, 2009. Entries
may be hand-delivered or
mailed, but must be received
by the deadline. Please note
that this is not a post-mark
deadline.

University graduate. He
always knew the Savannah

when he was invited by the
Korea Trade-Investment
Promotion Agency to attend
the upcoming business dele
gation in Seoul, Korea - Buy
Korea 2009. Over 2,000
companies from around the
world will be represented.
Thompson will be attending
this event in January 2009.
Equipped with his
Savannah State University
background and training, the
alumnus is trotting the globe
as an industrial supplier of
infrastructure and technolo
gy. Thompson received the
"Export Achievement
Certificate" from the U.S
Department of Commerce-
U.S and Foreign Commercial
Service for "recent accom
plishments in the global mar
ketplace".
Thompson started his
company in Savannah in
1982. FTE is now headquar
tered in metropolitan Atlanta.
The company has positioned
itself to provide services in
the international market. FTE
has resources to supply prod
ucts to both developed and
developing nations world
wide.
Thompson Enterprises
main goal is to provide the
best service to his customers,
import and export, regardless
of the the scope of the work.
To ensure this, he is staffed
and equipped to provide a
wide range of technical serv
ices.
Thompson is a very
busy businessman and is con
tinuously engaged in profes
sional development activities
that will further his involve
ment in the global market.
He completed the Governor's
Mentor-Protege' Program
some years ago, which is
designed to enhance
Georgia's economic growth

White Recipient of SCLC's "First" Drum
Major Lifetime Community Award
In addition to a national
Stellar Award, Georgia
Radio Music Award,
inductee into the city's Ralph
Mark Gilbert Civil Rights
Museum and numerous other
accolades, Savannah native,
30-year radio icon, gospel
recording artist and commu
nity activist Lester Lec'k
White, on Friday, January 9,
2009, during a banquet held
at Carey Hilliard's
Restaurant in Garden Citv
Lester Lec'k White
became Savannah's "first"
recipient of the Savannah
Coastal Chapter of the
SCLC's "Drum Major
Lifetime Community Award."
The award stands as a
symbol for unbiased leader
ship and is awarded to per
sons who have added
improvement to a communi-
ty-at-large and her citizens
over the years. White is the
"first" ever to be bestowed in
Savannah with the recogni
tion. In his acceptance
speech he credited his late
parents, James and Sarah
White, for instilling the val
ues of "serving" and "doing
the right things" into the
hearts of their four children:
James, Kathleen, Julius and
Lester.
The award was present
ed to White by the president
of the Georgia Chapter of the
Southern Christian
Leadership Conference Rev.
Samuel Mosteller and local
president Mr. Carl W.
Gilliard. Dignitaries in atten
dance included Pastor
George P. Lee III,
Commission Chairman Pete
Liakakis and Commissioner
Priscilla Thomas. The award
is in the spirit of the organi
zation's founding president's
birthday, Rev. Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr., who would
be celebrating his 80 lh on
January 15, 2009 if he had
lived.
