Metro Police have teamed
with the White House to
become a certifying organi
zation for the President’s
Volunteer Service Award, a
national program recognizing
Americans who have demon
strated a commitment to vol
unteer service.
SCMPD’s Volunteers in
Policing are citizens who
help build bridges between
Metro Police and the com
munity through volunteer
and community outreach
services. Last year, they ded
icated 3,000 hours to com
munity service on behalf of
SCMPD. Anyone interested
in becoming a Volunteer with
Metro Police is encouraged
to go to the SCMPD website
at www.scmpd.org and click
on “Citizens’ Academy and
Volunteers”. As part of this
program, volunteers who
qualify annually will now
receive recognition with a
President’s Volunteer Service
Award.
SCMPD is also accept
ing applications for the first
Citizens’ Academy of 2009
which starts February 12.
This program helps give citi

police department and the
environment in which it
works. Many participants go
on to volunteer in the com
munity working in partner
ship with the police.
The President’s
Volunteer Service Award pro
gram was created by
President George W. Bush to
give Presidential recognition
to those who meet require
ments for volunteer service
measured by the number of
service hours performed in a
year.
Metro Police is one of
thousands of organizations
that have joined forces to
deliver the award and honor
volunteers across the country.
As a Certifying Organization,
SCMPD is responsible for
verifying service hours, nom
inating potential recipients
and delivering the award.

The City of Savannah is
asking for citizen input on the
Flood Hazard Mitigation Plan
at an open house on
Wednesday, January 28 from
9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the
Metropolitan Planning
Commission (MPC) 100 East
State Street.
As a continuation of its
ongoing floodplan and
stormwater management
efforts the City's flood plan
assesses current flood hazard
conditions, including histori
cally flooded areas and the
most critical repetitively
flooded properties, to devel
op strategies to consider in
reducing or eliminating future
flood losses. The plan will
also serve as a means to help
reduce the flood insurance
premiums for property own
ers insured through the
National Flood Insurance
Program (NFIP).
After the open house,
the final Flood Hazard
Mitigation Plan will be sub
mitted for adoption by City
Council. The final version
will be a stand-alone plan that
will serve as an update to the
Flood Hazard section of the
Chatham County Multi-juris
dictional Hazard Plan. The
overall goal of the Plan is to
provide greater focus and
foresight to the City of
Savannah in reducing its cur
rent and future flood hazards.
A copy of the Plan can
be examined at the Bull Street
Library and the City’s Permit
Center at 6 East Bay Street,
2nd Floor. The Plan can also
be viewed on-line at
www.Savannahga.gov and
then by clicking on the
“Citizen feedback needed on
draft Flood Plan” link under
the "City of Savannah
Highlights" section of the
home page.
