Lending A Helping Hand
in the Community
Sherwanda Stalworth and her children pictured with volunteers.
Early this year, undergraduate and graduate members of
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and Eureka Masonic Lodge
decided to unite and embark upon a life changing journey for a
deserving local family. Inspired by Ruth Essler of South
University, the members of the fraternities decided to remodel
and make upgrades to the home of a local family facing severe
financial obstacles. Initiated by Christopher Middleton, a local
attorney and fraternity member, The Christmas Exchange
Project would prove to be an invaluable act of kindness for a
local family amidst our nation's challenging economic strug
gles.
This year, Sherwanda Stalworth and her five children:
Rasaan Downs, 12, William Ford, 13, James Downs, 14, Sean
Downs, 16, and NaShanda Downs, 16, were recipients of the
Christmas Exchange Project award. The Stalworths were one
of several families considered for the project. Their nomination
was submitted by Ms. Durden of Big Brother/Big Sister of
Savannah. At the time of the vetting process, the eldest,
NaShanda Downs was hospitalized due to injuries sustained in
a car accident and Rasaan Downs was recovering from a foot
injury. When asked about the decision to select the Downs fam
ily, Middleton stated, "Our project was never crafted for a fam
ily of that size, but once we heard the testimony of this single
mother and the trials and tribulations the family has endured, it
would have been a travesty against humanity not to come to
their assistance."
The project spanned three days and culminated with a
dramatic reveal of the family's home. Sean Downs told design
specialist, Shatilly Simms, "This was the best Christmas gift
ever." Alonzo Wright, a volunteer and specialist with Gateway
Behavioral Services, expressed interest in providing future
mentorship to the four young Downs children.
Sponsors for the project included: The Mulberry Inn of
Downtown Savannah; Savannah State Univ. Chapter of Omega
Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.; Day Clean Tours, Inc.; Mt. Hermon
Baptist Church; Old Savannah Tours, Inc.; Dr. Dana
Broughton; Michael and Linda Edwards; Eureka Masonic
Lodge # 1; Friends of Vermont Law School; and Friends of
