Yarbrough Sr. has named Curdedra N. Andrews as director of the Title III Program. Andrews has served in various administrative posi tions since joining the Title III office in 2005, including a promotion to interim direc tor in August 2008. As Title III director, which is a cabinet-level position, Andrews is respon sible for managing an approximately $3.6 million budget supporting programs to improve academic quality, student services, and institu tional and fiscal manage ment. Also, she is responsible for program monitoring, financial compliance, and overall administration of Title III grants. Prior to join ing Savannah State, Andrews was employed by Friedman’s Jewelers, 2001- 2004, as a marketing coordi nator for about 600 stores across the southern region of the U.S. Previously, she served as a marketing professional for Carson Products, a cor porate ethnic hair care com pany, from 1996-2001; she was promoted to associate brand manager in 1998. Andrews studied accounting and received the Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Savannah State University in 1995. She is expected to com plete her graduate degree in Management and Leadership from Webster University in March 2009. Andrews is cer tified in grants management See Title III, page 14 Clemmons Honored as Carver Celebrates 82nd Anniversary On February 28, 2009, Carver State Bank honored John B. Clemmons, Sr. for his many years of leadership and service to the bank and the Savannah com munity. The tribute took place during Carver's 82nd Anniversary recep tion held at the bank's main office at 701 Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard. Miller. moving to Savannah, he was a high school princi pal for four (4) years in Harlan, Kentucky and a professor at Morehouse College, Kentucky State College, and the University of Southern California. Clemmons earned California, Los Angeles. His academic accomplishments also include the Ford Foundation Fellowship, 1952; University of Southern California Teaching Fellowship, 1953; and the National Science Faculty Fellowship, 1958. Clemmons has received numerous awards for his civic activities. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity (The Boule). He has served of the national executive College and a Master of board of Sigma Pi Phi and Science from Atlanta University. Elmore, pro fessor emeritus of humanities, and Novella Cross Holmes, associate professor of mass com munications were both honored during the 58th Annual Southern Regional Press Institute(SRPI) held on Friday, February 28 at Savannah State University. Elmore received the inaugural Louis J. Corsetti Award for Excellence in Journalism for his work in the field of mass communications and journalism. Elmore, a graduate of Savannah State, went on to teach at the institu tion for more than 35 years, until his retire ment in 2007. Under his leader ship, Savannah State University's department of mass communications was accredited in May 2007 by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACE- JMC) joining the University of Georgia in Athens as the only other mass communication programs in the state of Georgia with that accreditation. He has also made a name for himself as a respected scholar and a leading voice on the history of Savannah. He has penned over eight books and has written in over fifty refereed and non refereed journals. Elmore has also served tute from 1974-1975, and from 1980-1986. Corsetti, for whom the award is named, has served as a consultant with the Southern Regional Press Institute since 1963, missing only one year of his nearly fifty years of service to the Press Institute. Corsetti was the first white consultant of the institute. He retired from West Liberty State College in Wheeling, West Virginia, and now resides in Griffin, Ga. Holmes received the Wilton C. Scott Award for Excellence in Scholastic Journalism for her dedication and work as an advisor to the Tiger's Roar, which fashions its self as the independent student voice of Savannah State University. Holmes has servesd in this capacity for many years. She has served the university for thirty years, and has served as director of the SRPI for nearly twenty years. Under her direc tion, the SRPI has been transformed into one of the finest scholastic press associations in America. Under her aegis, funding to the press institute increased, the Luetta Colvin Milledge and Louise Lautier Owens Awards and Press Institute Luncheon were established and the Louis R. Lautier Memorial Award for See Awards, page 7 King Assumes New Position Barbara King takes oath History was made on Friday, Februay 27, as Barbara J. King was installed as the first African American and first woman Postmaster at Savannah State University’s Jordan Business Auditorium. King was sworn in by Martin Thompson. After being installed, King told an eager crowd that she and her staff are committed to providing the best service to the community. King attended the University of Alabama in Birmingham, and has plans to continue her higher educationstudies in Savannah. She began her career with the Postal Service in 1985 as a Mail Processing Clerk. King’s detailed assignments includ ed Supervisor, Distribution Operations, Customer Service Analyst, Operations Support Specialist, Delivery and Retail Analyst, Postmaster for Gardendale Alabama and Manager of Customer Services. King has served as acting postmas ter in Savannah since March 2008.
